Alright. I just logged off and back in and it says "cast my vote."
But this is also distracting from the topic of this thread. |

The poll system is based on cookies and sometimes multiple votes are possible.
The post voting system is based on a unique record of the user and the post so no double voting is possible.
I inherited the former from the guy who initially programmed all this, while I designed the latter myself.
I think negative votes would put a very negative ambiance and discourage people from posting anything that would not be crowd-pleasing. If you look at the statistical table of the members who got the most votes, it does, I think, reflect fairly the quality of their contribution here.

It would be a great feature to this forum, if I could see the specific posts that I have voted useful for myself! |

Arturs, this great feature does exist (I think only for Pro members) and is accessible from the second tab on the Active topics: more page.

"Yes" to positive votes; "absolutely no" to negative votes. But perhaps a second type of button might also be handy, to distinguish between utility and enjoyment/ agreement? Or, if you really want to get fancy, there could be three vote buttons: "Useful", "I agree", and "I enjoyed this" (or whatever phraseology seems best).
It seems that people often vote for a post as a way of indicating the latter two responses. And while that's probably better than having a lot of one-line "me too" or "LOL" follow-up posts that I've seen on other forums, it does make it hard to differentiate the informative from the amusing.
"No" to being able to see who has voted for you. The anonymous voting system seems to work quite well, as far as I can see. No need to complicate things. If I get any votes for a post, it's enough for me to know that someone found it useful, or enjoyed it. (Okay, to be honest - it's probably even enough just to know that someone actually read it.)
And "yes, please" to being able to correct one's votes. Perhaps within a particular time window, as with the "edit" function? But this feature's a lot lower on my wish list.
But really, I'm just grateful to have found this forum, and to be able to read you folks. So many of your posts are both informative and amusing - and often inspiring as well! Buttons, or no buttons, the rest is icing on the linguistic cake.
Edited to add: as long as the "edit" button remains..!

Perhaps you could split the vote system up in two systems.
One for linguistically useful and interesting content and one for ''funny'' posts.

I used to use Amazon's kindle discussion forum, which has "yes" and "no" votes. Some people ended up attracting trolls who voted them down out of spite, regardless of the merits of their point. I stopped using the forums because of how nasty people were towards each other, and it was partly due to negative votes (although negative voting was probably more of the result of nastiness, not the orginal cause).

I don't have any particular opinion about the votes, but I do know that I accidentally click on the "Useful? Click to
VOTE for this post button" and there seems to be no way to Undo. Not that I would usually mind but I accidentally
voted on a post I didn't find useful at all.

I provided a fix for this some time ago:
Moving the ’vote’ link out of the way
