Hello everyone. I'm a Chinese major but I'm bound and determined to learn Korean. So I just thought I should keep a log to motivate myself. My main goal is improving my speaking and listening skills, total fluency being a bit of a far off goal.
I've taken Korean classes for a year but feel I know almost no practical Korean... It's also kind of sad because most of the people I know are Korean, I really should know more. But my pronunciation is so bad I've always been shy to speak it. This site says: You can reach basic written and oral fluency within 12 months of study at one hour a day. So by those parameters I am going to throw shyness aside and start on a 12 month plan to learn Korean. Any textbook suggestions or tips would be helpful. 2 persons have voted this message useful | |

Kind of makes me wonder how you're bound to learn Korean, and why not Japanese as well. :) But good luck with your study. Don't worry too much (I got this *advice* on this very forum)! ( I too am learning Korean, I find it very interesting!!) This should help you find some resources : What’s the best Korean self-study book? I'm not a huge Pimsleur fan since it is quite expensive for what you get. For you, however, I think it would work very well because it is great for working on your pronunciation. You don't learn a ton of vocabulary so you would need to supplement it with another course. Check around at libraries. I think I will tackle Japanese when my Korean and Chinese improve. I'm wary of studying too many languages at once. Thank you for the suggestions by the way. I've actually already picked up Pimsleur from the library but it's just so... boring. I'll have to keep going with it. It seems I've ruined my KLEAR 1 textbook with some sort of horrible liquid so I'm going to be starting with the second. I think that's my level. Anyways, I'll start that tomorrow.. I've started to try and watch korean dramas along with the scripts of the shows... but korean drama is pretty painful for me. It's hard to find other types of shows that are scripted or subtitled. Missing Chinese t.v on that point. I might need to start looking for childrens books. That talk to me in korean website is really helpful. I've also been watching "Let's Speak Korean" I've been focusing a lot on review in these first few days, there are grammar points Im still shaky on. I've used both "Talk To Me In Korean" and "Let's Speak Korean" quite a bit in my studies and found both very useful (though I've only started using TTMIK very recently).
