and in some cases the humour doesn't translate

I've run into this several times with English-subbed Korean shows. There will be a word-play joke in the show, but the other person watching with me (who doesn't really know any Korean) has no clue why it is actually funny since they are simply reading the English translation. I've seen "jokes" of this type translated three ways and none really quite work:

1) They translate the words and ignore the word-play.
2) They translate the words and add a translator note explaining the word play. (This is usually only found in videos that are fan-subbed, not professionally-subbed ones.)
3) They change one of the words completely to make a similar pun in English. (KBS World is notorious for doing this. They also have a tendency to ignore meanings completely during word games on shows like Star Golden Bell and just use English words that fit the same game pattern instead.)

KOREAN - 2.0 hours

Yay! finished Pimsleur's I. I do feel that I rushed it a bit, so I plan on listening to the series again. But I think I've picked up enough to continue on to II. I'll probably ratchet up the vocabulary learning a bit. I had wanted to go slow, so as to not overwhelm myself, but I become more confident in pronouncing words, I think I can probably increase the daily number of words studied.

- Pimsleur's [#28 - #30]
- Vocab 15 (+1)
- HP SS p2s2

GREEK (MAINTENANCE) - 1.25 Hours

- Sponge Bob (Greek Dub) - Season 1 - Ep 6
- Little Prince (audio and text) - Chapters [9 - 10]
- Review vocab

KOREAN - 4.0 hours

Well, I'm a bit irritated with myself. I had to abort my attempt at going through the history of animé in Korean. The reason being: very little animé is put out originally in Korean, most (all that I could find using several different sources) is released in Japanese and then dubbed into Korean, thus the Korean subtitles are not a transcription of the Korean dub but rather are a re-translation of the Japanese. So, there are variations, some minor (like words being switched around) and some major, between the subtitle and the Korean dub, which makes it useless for me at my current stage of Korean. I'm irritated with myself because I ran into exactly this problem when learning Greek, and I should have done a bit of research to discover whether I would run into this problem in Korean before wasting a bunch of time, and endured much frustration, listening to Korean that didn't match the subtitles!

So, I'm back to watching Project Makeover, which in some ways is better, as it's a Korean language movie geared (at least potentially) for adults. So, I'll avoid the trap I've fallen into with Greek, mentioned in a previous post, of a continuous diet of Greek dubbed foreign cartoons intended for young children.

- Pimsleur's II [#1 - #4]
- Let's speak Korean (old) - review 3 - 5
- Vocab 18 (+3)
- HP SS p2s2 - p3-s2
- Project Makeover - [00:00 - 10:00]

GREEK (MAINTENANCE) - 3 Hours

- Sponge Bob (Greek Dub) - Season 5 Many episodes appx 1.5 hours
- Little Prince (audio and text) - Chapters [11 - 14]
- Greek Now - review chapter 1
- Review vocab

Well, I just used the site yesasias:

http://www.yesasia.com/us/en/home.html

They have an OK selection, and prices seem reasonable. It has an English version, which of course for me is a big plus. I'm sure there are better online stores, but I've ordered a number of items from them and all orders were completed without problem.
