Korean pop songs have much better composition and production than Japanese pop songs.
It's not even close, which is why no one really cares about J-pop anymore. Jpop still
stuck with its 90s sound. The only idol group in Japan with good music is Perfume, and
that is because Nakata Yasutaka composes their music.
Anyway, my problem with J-pop is that the songs are aimed at wotas, the 40-year-old dudes
into toddler-like concepts that have songs that sound like nursery rhymes.

I will grant you one point: One of the AKB subgroups (Watarirouka Hashiritai) seems to fit
every one of your complaints about J-pop with every song they release. They are all very
high-pitched and all have crappy music with no real melody or beat to follow. In fact, I think
that's why I got such a mixed impression of AKB48 at first. When I found a couple of their
albums a couple years ago, one was AKB48's "Beginner" album, but the other was (I just
recently realized) actually an album from the Watarirouka Hashiritai subgroup, not the main
group. That explains why the second album had such a very different vibe and simply didn't
appeal to me at all.

I don't know if you've heard of Nogizaka46 (AKB48's main rival), but they only have
one song I like:

It sounds like the J-pop of the 90s I like with modern production, which is why I like
it. Like most J-idol groups, the rest of their A-side tracks are fairly bad.
However, Perfume is the shit.
Perfume - Nee
Aside from that, in J-pop I mainly listen to BoA and Amuro Namie. I prefer J-rock when
it comes to music in Japan, though there are a few good hiphop artists/groups.

I've still got that list you posted a while back of recommended Japanese BoA songs, I just
hadn't had the chance to check any of them out yet (partly because I lost interest in
Japanese before I had gotten the chance to do so back then). Also back when I was studying
Japanese last time I found a couple Amuro Namie albums but nothing I found on them
seems to interest me.
I've only heard of Perfume previously from your Twitter posts about them. Perhaps I should
watch a few of their MVs that you posted.
On a related note, I was surprised that you didn't answer my Tweet a few weeks back noting
that last time I bought music I ended up buying "Ella Koon - So In Love". I still have no
interest in learning Cantonese, but that song was just too likable to pass up.

Probably because I barely use that account (I have zero time to practice) and barely have
time to reply.
For example, I added some cards to my Anki decks (short of my weekly goal, this week will
be short and next week will be as well.) I just really need to find some time to at least
do a little studying, even if it's all Anki-based and some podcasts.

Interesting fact I just ran across: As of February of this year, two idols are active members
of *both* a "48" group and Nogizaka46 simultaneously. Nogizaka46's Ikoma Rina joined
AKB48 and SKE48's Matsui Rena joined Nogizaka46. The reason this info *really* caught
my attention is that I had just recently switched to Matsui Rena as my favorite "48"
member.

I only know Kojima
Haruna.
And I intend to keep it that way.

Strangely enough, Kojima Haruna is exactly who I bumped out of the lead to switch to
Matsui Rena...hehe. She's definitely still at the top of the pack, though (and is still my
favorite among AKB48 itself).
Also, I find it somewhat strange that you don't seem all that fond of Yura from Girls Day
even though something that I noticed about Kojima from the start is how much she reminds
me of Yura (which is part of why I found myself liking her so much since I *do* like Yura).
