Out of curiosity, James29, do you recommend FSI Programmatic or Basic?

Definitely FSI Basic. I have not done programmatic so I cannot really comment on it, but Basic is more comprehensive and is preferred by people on this forum.

I personally like doing one course at a time and then moving on so I like your plan to consolidate. Although, I only study for about an hour a day so you have more time to fill.

I'd recommend doing assimil before FSI. I think FSI is much more enjoyable and effective if you already know the vast majority of the vocabulary and grammar. If you do assimil thoroughly you will be able to get through FSI only spending 3-4 hours per lesson instead of 6-7. FSI is great, but it does get a bit tedious at times and I cannot imagine doing it without any Spanish background.

One other comment... I prefer FSI to platiquemos. I think it is just better. Platiquemos edits out material and makes the lessons shorter. FSI also has better quality audio. You will see comments on the forum talking about low quality audio on FSI, but that was before they remastered the audio.

Ah, that's good. I was originally planning on doing Assimil first, so I'll stick to that. Thanks James29.

I'm doing the FSI basic lessons, but I already had a base in Spanish. I think they would be very difficult if I were
starting from scratch. As it is, the audio provides excellent practice, and I only rarely find myself reading the text. I
don't think that they're boring at all, but I always do them while walking, so that may help.

Here's my log for the week. I've tried to add some more native content and more speaking this time. I watched another Spanish film without subtitles, El espĂritu de la colmena - an interesting film, although not much dialogue. I also had a conversation session with a Spanish teacher over skype. As far as reading is concerned, I read a number of chapters of the Easy Spanish Reader by William T. Tardy. I've also been trying to work through the Spanish translation of the first Harry Potter book using the Learning with Texts app.

How do you have so much time to study each week? That's a very intense schedule.

Well, I don't practise in one block. I do between 10 and 30 minutes here and there, and use a time management app called toggl (see toggl.com) to keep track of how much time I have spent practising. This makes it seem more manageable, and you clock up a surprising number of minutes before you realise it.

Also, I have an hour commute each way on public transport, so that's 2 hours per day I would otherwise be spending snoozing :)

Here's my time data for the week beginning 28th October.

This has been a difficult week in terms of language study. I fell behind during the week and had to catch up at the weekend, which was a little bit exhausting.

On the bright side, I had some good conversation time over skype, and I think this is going to be an increasingly important part of my learning. I've also been participating in the November 6 Week Language-Learning Challenge as @sam6wc.
