This is true. And Genki was a bad example of something that could be used for kana only, because if I recall
correctly they do drop some of the furigana completely. But there are many text books out there that have kana
only, for example Japanese for Busy People, kana version. Genki is far superior though, IMO.

As you can clearly see from the dialog above, if you only know kanji or only kana, you wouldn't be
able to read it. |

Yes, Japanese which is not written for learners generally requires one to be able to read kanji and kana. Was that
your point?

Thanks for all the replies, so i'll definitely be learning both written and spoken.
But now i'm super confused on where to start with the different books named like JLPT, Genki, Assimil and so on.
Perhaps some more people can give their methods for learning Japanese?
I probably wont start till a few months into next year, but it's good to plan ahead!

Maybe try Michel Thomas Foundation and Advanced, for the spoken part, if you're a beginner.
Tae Kim's Japanese Grammar Guide for grammar.

Yes, the one that is online. I think it was possible to download it like a PDF file and print it if you need.

Also, after you've gotten past the complete beginner stage, you might find the Rikai-chan add-on for Firefox useful. It tells you what any kanji or word means when you mouse over it. |

Rikaichan is available as Rikaikun for Chrome, and Furigana-Injector is also a nice app
to have.
