Korean in Kuwait

This is my language learning log. I am currently working on my first foreign language, Korean, with a goal of native-level fluency. I started this project in July of 2008, and nearly every day since then I have spent a few hours actively working on Korean and many more hours passively immersing myself in the language.

It took me a while to gain some traction learning, but my effort eventually payed off. The rough time-line so far has been like this:

07-2008: Worked in a textbook.
08-2008: Did Remembering the Kanji.
09-2008: Tried various methods.
10-2008: Tried various methods.
11-2008: Tried various methods.
12-2008: Tried various methods.
01-2009: Read children's books.
02-2009: Read without a dictionary.
03-2009: Listened intensively.
04-2009: Studied word roots.

Besides RTK, I would not recommend any of the things I did before January 2009, but feel free to ask me any questions if you are also learning Korean.

TAC 2009 Introduction

From the thread, "Ideal Systematic Approach to Korean?" there is a warning from Professor Arguelles that keeps coming to my mind.

ProfArguelles wrote:
So, do not berate yourself if after ten years of study you still cannot effortlessly read a novel; this is normal and to be expected.

I think ten years is too long.

My language goal for 2009 is to effortlessly read novels in Korean. The criteria I will use is to read at least a novel per week for a month, or alternatively, to pass the "airplane test" on a flight to or from Korea. If I were to achieve this, it would be with less than a year and a half of study, far less than the ten years mentioned above, and I would consider it to be a total annihilation of Korean.

TAC 2009 posts begin on page 20.

Good luck GoldFibre. Do you get many Korean speaking people in Kuwait?

I have never met one, so it's going to be a fairly solitary study.

In a way it's great though. It means you will have skills in a language that is rare in Kuwait.

Good luck with your studies. Perhaps, if you get more fluent you can start to use the Korean thread which is now defunct, considering no one has replied after my post months ago...

I will keep that in mind and may revive the thread once I get to the right point in my studies.
