Childrens Library is a cool site offering books in a number of languages. There are only two books in Korean, The Milkmaid and The Rocket Book. I read both of them and was surprised by the difficulty of the vocabulary in the latter.

TAC 2009 Day 1

Well, 2008 went out with a bang, a car accident, to be precise. Fortunately I wasn't hurt, but more importantly, my Korean materials are all fine. :)

Today I am to reignite my pursuit of Korean fluency, and I am sure that this year will be quite fruitful. My first book will be "갑수는 왜 창피를 당했을까." And off I am!

TAC 2009 Day 1

I finished reading "갑수는 왜 창피를 당했을까," which is 119 pages, but about half of those pages are pictures.

TAC 2009 Day 2

I read "너랑 놀고 싶어," a story about three girls in the second grade and their social drama. It was 107 pages long with fewer pictures than the previous book. The remaining book I have checked out from the library here is "우리 동네는 시끄럽다." It is two or three times the length of the previous two, so I doubt I can finish it in one day. Anyway I'll be back at the Korean library tomorrow to get more books. Maybe I will get a few I can finish in a day, and read this one bit by bit.

TAC 2009 Day 3

Today I read "난 황금 알을 낳을 거야!" a funny story about chickens that was quite short. I also had two sessions of conversation practice that went well. I am expressing myself with less and less hesitation and need less clarification when listening. I'm also more comfortable switching between speech levels when appropriate.

TAC 2009 Day 4

I read "네 잘못이 아니야, 나탈리!" which is about a little girl who was molested. I have been picking some pretty sad children's books to read. It was 43 pages long.

GoldFibre, when you read these children's books, how much of the vocabulary do you understand? Is it challenging at all, or is it too demanding? And how much do you feel that you are gaining in terms of idiomatic expressions and grammar?

I'm getting a lot more out of it than I thought I would at first. I know 80-95% of the words, depending on the book, but I don't use a dictionary while I read and pick up quite a few new words from context.

I also think it is helping put correct grammar and expressions in my head, since once I can understand a super-majority of the words, I can focus on the sentence meaning as a whole. I can do this with almost all sentences in these books, but could only do it in a few sentences per page in Harry Potter.

Lastly, when I almost entirely understand the book, I am more motivated to pay attention and not drift off thinking about other things. When the material is more difficult I've gotten too good at having the hangul's sound play aloud in my head without trying to comprehend the sentences!
