TAC 2009 Day 55
Did my 40 Anki cards for the day and hit 1,000 total. Tomorrow is the start of a four day weekend in Kuwait, so I'm going to have a lot of time to work on Korean.

The better (and more contemporary) way of saying that would be "GoldFibre 킹왕짱!"

Korean Eight Month Review
My current goal is to get my reading ability up to young-adult level books. The past two months I have been reading heavily, usually without a dictionary. The main area of improvement during this time has been my understanding of Korean grammar. At this level of reading, I very rarely come across a sentence whose grammar obstructs my understanding. Any trouble I have would be solely due to insufficient vocabulary.
Tomorrow I am going to finish Harry Potter, which means I achieved my nine month goal one month early (or my six month goal two months late, since they were the same). I feel very confident reading the material in Harry Potter, and it is time to switch gears to fill other gaps in my Korean.
The area I am most lacking in is listening. Thus far, conversation sessions with real Koreans are good production practice, but not good listening practice. Native Koreans usually talk to me more slowly than they would normally speak and aren't about to repeat things over and over. My listening has improved, but I hypothesize that there are a lot of gains to be made with specifically targeted studying.
Korean Twelve Month Goal
* Be able to understand news television broadcasts well
My plans always change and get adapted as they progress through the execution phase, but the current plan is to attack this one subject at a time in increasing order of difficulty. First I will exclusively watch the weather portion of the news, learn the vocabulary, and listen and read along until I understand well. After that I will move to a more difficult topic like sports, and so on.
I've already downloaded about ten different weather forecasts from the past week, which should be variations on saying the same thing. I've also asked my conversation partner to prepare a news article on the weather to test my progress when we meet. I have no idea how long this is supposed to take, but the accomplishment of my previous goal shows that continuous effort, access to resources, and refining one's methods can lead to impressive results.
So tomorrow, when I finish Harry Potter, this next phase begins. I will continue to read, but it will not be the primary activity for the time being. My due date for this goal is July 1, 2009.

TAC 2009 Day 57
This morning I read chapter 17, the final chapter of Harry Potter. That is one long book!
I'll probably switch my reading over to shorter material like comic books while I am working on understanding the news. I'm still waiting on a huge package of them to arrive, but I should get it next week.

TAC 2009 Day 57
For an hour or so I went through and listened to the weather forecasts I had downloaded, then decided on a fixed amount I would spend on each one. I have both the video and the transcript open at once and listen to the forecast 50 times in a row sometimes reading and sometimes not reading along. After 50 times I switch to another clip and do the same.
Later this evening I met with my conversation partner, and I gave my own weather forecast using the vocabulary I picked up from earlier in the day. After hearing my predictions for Korea and Florida, the other people in the house wanted to give me their own weather forecasts and see if I could understand. I did pretty well for only a few hours of studying, but I realize I probably need to memorize the names of all the provinces and cities in Korea if I want to understand the news.
And I did my 40 Anki cards for the day.

Congratulations on reaching your 8 month goal!
I want to ask you...in your experience, are textbooks/grammar books a good enough source for learning the grammar you need to read a book like Harry Potter?
I'm still working through a beginners' textbook, and I'm worried I won't have the resources to prepare me for native material...I know even children's books require a good grasp of grammar.
