TAC 2009 Day 89
I read a funny article today here, and understood or extrapolated the meaning of everything written. I also understood the context from previously following the WBC and from my friends talking about the Korean-Japanese rivalry in figure skating.
The criteria for putting "Speaks" on your language profile in this forum is that you can read 80% of a newspaper and hold regular conversations on any topic. I'm getting quite close to that even though I have some weak points and certainly wouldn't consider myself close to fluent. Maybe I'll test myself with a newspaper every so often to see if I can qualify for "Speaks: Korean" on my profile.

I finally finished going through volume 1 of 케로로. I ended up with about 700 new words which averages out to 4 per page. I wonder how many words I will pick up in the next volume. It will be interesting to see the difference.
Best new card:
지구가 파괴되면 반다이 工場도 사라져 버릴 거야!

Wow, I really like the way you're doing vocab cards there. I'll definitely try it out. My RTH finally got here, so I'm changin pace some and mostly focusing on getting through it. Thanks for the idea. |

It's a lot of work, but you will feel great once you finish. Good luck!

Thanks. Not to high-jack your journal or anything, but I'm through just over 400 of them by the end of today. Almost a third of the book, so that feels good. Of course, it will take a while to have any real mastery of them.

Nine Month Status Update
Today is nine months since I started studying Korean. Below is a breakdown of how I see my status.
Reading:
I can read books like Harry Potter easily and understand everything that is going on, though I still miss a lot of individual words. I also understand the majority of Keroro, which feels like a much higher level.
Listening:
My listening has come a long way. I pick up all the words and phrases that I know, and am used to the patterns of both informal and formal Korean. This past month was definitely a turning point for my listening.
Speaking:
I consider myself conversational. I don't always speak naturally, but I am quickly learning to present my thoughts in the different packaging that is required by Korean. I can speak generally about any topic, though I have to explain around words I may not know.
Writing:
I'm horrible at writing. If you read my writing you would think I just began studying Korean and I don't even know the basics. For whatever reason my comprehension and speaking skills don't translate naturally into proper writing. This is the least of my priorities though, and I probably won't focus on it for quite a while.
The past month my major gains were in listening and speaking. However, I think I've started a good method for me to take in and retain a lot of vocabulary. In the week or so that it took to plow through Keroro I learned at a far faster rate than I had been before and also deepened my Hanja knowledge a great deal. My goal is still to understand the news, but I think its best to take an indirect route since this is working so well.
There are also some "soft" things that I have been doing for Korean, but don't talk about much. One is that I often visualize myself in some fun situation where I would use Korean and play it out in my mind. This I find more engaging than attempting to change my "inner monologue" to Korean. The setting of the situation necessitates that I would speak in Korean, so I don't feel like I'm forcing myself to do something. The other thing I have been doing is not surfing this site and many other English sites that take up my time. In fact, I have no idea if anyone else has been keeping a log on this site for the past month, because I don't even see the topic lists.
Anyway, here are some things that I want to do eventually in my Korean studies:
* Broaden my base of familiar Hanja out to 6000+
* Perfect the Korean version of business correspondence
* Increase my repertoire of songs for the inevitable karaoke sessions
* Be able to distinguish and imitate various dialects and accents
* Do some kind of public speaking
None of these is particularly pressing now, but down the road I would love to get to them.
The next month I want to focus on vocabulary, while maintaining my steady progress in speaking. I intend to blow up my new vocabulary with my current reading method and then reinforce the words through all my passive listening time.

I started in Keroro volume 4, and there are fewer unknown words so far.
Best sentence:
아키 씨, 今年 팬티는 역시 뱀무늬... 이상한 것도 많네...

Kept going in Keroro volume 4, this time running into a lot more unknown words per page. I was also proud that I picked up on a Dragonball Z reference in the comic.
Best sentence:
쳇 도깨비로 취임하자마자 수난을 當하는군. 그래도 고거 맛있네.
