I did two more pages of vocabulary out of Keroro 6. I should finish this volume tomorrow.

TAC 2009 Day 119

I finished doing vocabulary in Keroro 6 today. Here are the results:

Keroro vol 1: 819 (4.55 per page)
Keroro vol 4: 614 (3.41 per page)
Keroro vol 5: 536 (2.98 per page)
Keroro vol 6: 379 (2.11 per page)

That's 29% fewer than last time - a huge jump. This has been by far the most effective activity I've tried for my vocabulary. There isn't much else to do now except keep plugging at reading material. I have 8 more volumes of Keroro here and I really like the comic, so I will probably stick with it.

Month 10 Status Update

This month I did almost exclusively vocabulary study using comic books, word lists, and an SRS. Both the quantity of words I recognize and my knowledge of Korean roots have improved dramatically. I now understand the importance of the root base, as I can guess the meanings of new words much more reliably, much like I can in English.

These gains have come at some temporary cost to my spoken Korean, as I haven't had as much practice or interaction with my Korean friends this month.

I was previously planning to have May be a listening-focused month, but now I feel that I should continue to build up my vocabulary base first. I feel that if I improve my literacy to near-fluency, the other skills will come much more easily.

One change this coming month will probably be in my SRS card structure, as I phase out quizzing myself on the Hanja for new words. Once you know the Hanja for a word really well, I feel it is better to quiz on the Hangul, as the Hanja tend to give away the meaning too easily. I will still learn all new Hanja I come across, but new characters are becoming less and less frequent.

Hey GoldFibre,

I just wanted to let you know I finished RTH yesterday. A day earlier that I was shooting for...yeah!

Your posts and continued determination are inspiring. I think I'm going to follow you down the road of reading for the month of May. Perhaps some stuff at a lower level that yours, but I'm really itching to start seeing how Hanja plays out in real life and not just in my srs...

It's great that you finished! Already you have accomplished a lot, and now hopefully you can find some interesting reading material to work with.

TAC 2009 Day 120

Today I played basketball and then StarCraft with my Korean friends all night, so I didn't get any vocabulary study in.
