TAC 2009 Day 168
Forgot to mention - I'm on page 97 / 239 of the book I'm mining. At night I finished reading Keroro 14 and then ordered a bunch of books that Jiwon recommended. Thanks Jiwon! Also I am starting to plan a trip to go to Korea in August. I've been there before a few times for work, but I only saw Seoul, and it was before I spoke a single word of Korean. Hi Rmss, I have changed my study techniques many times since I started this log. Currently i don't take sentences out of my book, I just read until I come across an unknown word. Once I find one I create a card in Anki that has the Korean definition on the front. The card will quiz me on the Hanja if it is a Sino-Korean word, and on the Hangul if it is pure Korean. (and mixed script if it is of mixed origin) The back has the readings of any Hanja and definitions of any Hanja that I hadn't seen before. Here is an example of one I did yesterday:
I think this method, which works on recalling rather than recognition, became effective for me as I entered an advanced stage in Korean where I had a good foundation in Korean roots. GoldFibre! you needn't have ordered all the books I recommended! They were supposed to be mere suggestions. Plus, you might not find them all interesting as I have.
@ caleb: as you and GoldFibre requested, I'll post my recommendations below. However, do bear in mind that I'm just a Korean teenager with no expertise whatsoever in Korean literature. "Below are my humble recommendations of authentic Korean works. 괭이부리말 아이들 -Story about children who live in a shanty town in Incheon. Relatively simple language and easy to understand. Written by 김중미, published by 창작과비평사 ***** 가시고기 - It's a really sad and plaintive story of a father and his son. I don't want to reveal to much about the plot, except that it's really beautiful story. Written by 조창인, published by 밝은세상 세계최고의 우리 문화유산 - Non-fiction, scientifically analysing Korean cultural heritage. I really enjoyed this book myself. Written by 이종호, published by Cultureline 아홉살 인생 - an autobiographical novel, detailing life of a 9-year-old. It's nothing like Adrian Mole series. Very mature and thought-provoking. Written by 위기철, published by 청년사 지상에 숟가락 하나 - another autobiographical novel about a boy in Jeju Island growing up in post-war Korea. For Korean learners, however, it may not be as useful as 아홉살 인생, because it contains a lot of Jeju dialect in conversations. Written by 현기영, published by 실천문학 사 하늘 호수로 떠난 여행 - a collection of short accounts of the author's travel in India. Many Koreans liked this book because it apparently shed a different cultural perspective (which is not as revealing to me in Sri Lanka.. :P). But I found it enjoyable to read. Written by 류시화, published by 열림원. 공자가 죽어야 나라가 산다 - I haven't read this yet, but I'm planning to read it after my exams are over (ie after tomorrow). It's supposed to be a report about how Confucian beliefs have been crippling Korea for centuries, and how it's irrelevant to modern society. Written by 김 경일, published by 바다출판사. 화인열전 1 & 2 - It's a non-fiction about artists during the Chosun period. Very interesting to read, but it uses a lot of archaic words since it is more or less a historical report. You might see your Hanja studies put to use, as this is one of those books that uses Hanja in parentheses to make work meanings clear (as for me, I didn't bother to look at the Hanjas XD). Written by 유홍준, published by 역사비평사 Anything written by 한비야 - She's a Korean philanthropist and travel writer. A few years ago, she embarked on a journey around the world, taking land routes whenever possible with minimum air travel. After a few years of travelling, she moved to China to learn Chinese for one year at the age of 40, and now she works for an NGO, and published another book about her experience in the organisation. She's a truly inspiring figure, and her travel logs are entertaining to read. If you don't mind translations, you can try out these too. 육식의 종말 - Known as "Beyond Beef" in English. Report about how crazy beef consumption is changing the world. Language in the translation is a bit tough: after all, it's an academic report! Written by 제레미 리프킨 (Jeremy Rifkin), published by 시공사 톨스토이 단편선 - Tolstoy: Short Stories. I loved this collection of stories. :) Written by 톨스토이 (Tolstoy), published by 인디북 사라져 가는 목소리들 - orginally "Vanishing Voices: The Extinction of the World's Languages". A detailed analysis of language extinction and value of linguistic diversity. I really liked this book. Written by 다니엘 네틀 (Daniel Nettle) and 수잔 로메인 (Susan Romaine), published by EJB (EJ Books/이제이북스) If I gave you too many suggestion and you need to narrow it down, I'd definitely go with 괭이부리말 아이들, 가시고기 and something by 한비야. I ordered all the authentic Korean ones except for 세계최고의 우리 문화유산, which seems to be out of print. I guess I will look for it on Gmarket!
