Goldfibre. I really appreciate your dedication to learn this language.

But do you feel that learning Chinese characters have enhanced your understanding of Korean at all?

Hi Jiwon,

Thus far learning the characters hasn't helped my Korean, and I did not expect any benefit at this point. Currently my study is just the English meaning of the characters. Afterwards I will learn the characters as they relate to Korean.

GoldFibre, are you also learning the Hanja equivalent (In Korean pronunciation/Hangul spelling) of the characters you're learning?
ie 上 is spelt 상, etc?

Because if not I feel like you're gearing yourself up for little else but Korean literature study (from rather dense textbooks to boot) here.
Heck, even if you know all the characters and their 한글 spelling individually, I wonder how much that would help? Hanja based words in Korean are all around, but there's still the pure Korean words which make up a good 40% of vocabulary.
And then you would need to know when to use what...

Like the word 월(月) and it's pure Korean equivalent 달. You say 8개월 when counting months or naming months of the year, but 달 for when you say 'Next month', or when you're talking about the Moon itself.

I guess my question is if your goal is to learn Korean, wouldn't it be better to start with a textbook or some other written/audio material that could help you get the basics down (you know, like grammar) before looking at the framework (in the seldom used Hanja form, no less) of a portion of the vocabulary?
