No, you're not the only one. I don't speak Bulgarian (or Macedonian, for that matter). But my wife is a native Bulgarian, and she says that the two languages are almost 100% the same. If you know one, then you can speak and understand the other. There's not a lot of materials out there for Bulgarian, but maybe a bit more than for Macedonian. During much of the 20th century, Bulgaria considered Macedonia to be Bulgarian and Bulgarian troops occupied it in two world wars. The two languages are reputed to be close.
Thousands of Muslims in northern Greece (Greek Macedonia?) speak a dialect called Pomak. This is a form of Bulgarian and Pomaks understand standard Bulgarian. It is possible they understand Macedonian too. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

The topic is dead, but maybe someone is still interested in this language.
Macedonian is similar to Bulgarian, but I wouldn't ever say that it's almost the same. Not at all! I would say that Macedonian is halfway Bulgarian and Serbian. The grammar is very similar to Bulgarian if it comes to structures (maybe except three definite articles pertaining to position of the object in MK) , but at the same time Macedonian has loads of Serbian words. If it comes to sources, I use following: - Makedonski so/bez maka by Roza Tasevska - grammar coursebook, A1-A2/B1 level in Macedonian, English and Russian. Small dictionary included - during my lessons at uni we receive scans of excercises from the blue grammar book, unfortunately I can't remind myself its name - Zoze Murgoski - Anglisko-makedonski, makedonsko-angliski rechnik. - http://3maks.com/Files/Write/Images/Products/mak-ang-zoze_go lema.gif - actually it's a smaller one, but it's surprisingly good and it has almost all of the words i need - the last thing I would recommend is a "Knizhevnost makedonska" series where you can find the most important works in the history of Macedonian literature. -http://maticanaiselenici.com/images/news/kultura-knizevnost .jpg 6 persons have voted this message useful | |||

I'm learning Macedonian too. Here are some of the resources I've found useful:
1) Christina Kramer's 'Macedonian: a course for beginner and intermediate students'. A 3rd edition has just been printed. 2) Grammar exercises: http://www.utoronto.ca/slavic/macedonian/ 3) Online course for beginners: teaches pronunciation and grammar http://www.macedonianlanguage.org/ 4) Grammar and pronunciation for beginners. http://www.goethe-verlag.com/book2/DE/DEMK/DEMK002.HTM. This course can also be downloaded for I-Phones 5)Best dictionary I can find. 2-way: English/German/French/Greek/Italian/Macedonian http://www.idividi.com.mk/recnik/index.htm 6)2nd best dictionary. Macedonian/German/English http://rechnik.on.net.mk/ 7) 3rd best dictionary. I worked on Bulgarian for about two years and am now starting into Macedonian. They are closely related but the main difference is accentuation (stress in words and phrases). The Macedonian accent is more regular once you get used to it. Bulgarian word stress seems more random.
The hardest part of Macedonian is clitic usage especially "clitic doubling" You have to add in pronoun clitics for definite direct objects and indirect objects. Example Му ја дадов книгата на татко ми. The clitics are my and ja. From an analysis of Swadesh Lists for Bulgarian and Macedonian, I estimate that about 10% of the vocabulary is completely different, 35% has undergone a phonetic shift (two allophones for the same phoneme) and about 55% is common vocabulary.
