Selftelicy isn't an English word as far as I know, and I didn't really follow your explanation.
Could you describe it in Spanish?

1) What Mezzofanti said and apparently nobody is seriously taking in: "It is not as difficult as generally thought. Once you know six or seven completely unrelated ones you can learn any number of them"
2) Precisely, the ones who did it, consciously and passionately put the best of them into it, as a great artist or scientist would do in the work of their lives.

Excellent post. Very interesting. Your conclusions seem to be right on the money.

I agree with Luke, Sigiliso. Occasionally I had a hard time following it, but overall I enjoyed reading it. It's obvious you've dedicated some serious thought to the topic. I think it's a hard one to come to serious conclusions about as of right now...maybe if this website successfully promotes more polyglots, that "mystery" or whatever it is about why some people are language giants will be solved...;-) (Or not; it goes without saying that the mind is a profound thing).

I liked what you said about having a sense of humor and seeing patterns that make people go "What are you talking about?!" because I get this response *very* often from my best friends, haha. Eh, to each their own, I suppose. :-)

I found your post very unfounded and just lacking logical flow. Your point is that cognitive abilities have to do with how many languages and what kind of proficiency a learner can attain. I don't think you can think in a linear fashion just like you described it. There are many more factors which have to be taken into account for each learner in each language.

There are definately other factors into play, but it all starts out with IQ. IQ is the FOUNDATION for learning.

It does take a lot of dedication, CORRECT methods of learning, and time to learn a language. However, in order to even put these methods into practice, there has to be a particular IQ level. Sorry, but that's just nature.

The vast majority of doctors, surgeons, and professors have high IQs. It's genetic. They did bust their butts studying for their professions, but in order to even process the studying, they have to have the appropriate IQ level. It's simply genetics.

I honestly cannot fanthom anyone with an IQ of 85 or less learning several languages on his own, including the more difficult languages.

^^^Well, true how society worked IQ points into play. It is almost second nature for us in the world to measure intelligence through IQ scores. But you also have to realize there are tons of real brainless people with high IQ's.

To even tell how inaccurate IQ scores are, people usually take the tests once. Even if they were to take another IQ test, the score would most likely variate from one to another. Now how can you tell me these tests are accurate? It's the polygraph for intelligence...that's how I see it.

Another one of those things racial purists and supremacists love, LOVE to jump on is the IQ bell curve and the difference it has to each major race. I'm not implying anyone here is a racist simply for saying IQ's are necessary for measuring intelligence in someone. However, it surely doesn't help that racial supremacists use IQ's to show how they're intellectually superior than someone whose skin is merely darker in pigmentation.

It just shows how dated we really are when it comes to thinking subconsciously in this day and age of technology. We can't get past these little hang ups that should've been eliminated long ago once we pointed out the problems. Ever heard of the drug epidemic in the 60's? Well, guess what, it's prevalent more than ever currently, behind closed doors in our splendid modern age, and multiple Bible preachings, and how intelligent we are through IQ scores.

Hey, people if somone has an IQ of 120 let's say, and is snorting cocaine, which I'm sure someone out there is doing so currently, maybe the IQ score is just a bit of an aberration, no?

This is perhaps why this thread has been so uncomfortable for me. For one, it's been a lot of work for me to follow Sigiloso's writings, but I found some interesting bits and I'm glad he shared them with us. But laden in there are statements relating race with IQ, which might fit better on a David Duke forum.

I recall something an English professor had told us one day, and it really stuck with me: "Talent is 90% sweat."

I'm sorry for making all of you squeamish when reading this entire thread. I just think IQ is outdated. When was this test constructed again...sometime in the early 1900's? Seems a bit outdated to me.

Also, your quote Kate, is quite well said by your professor. Honing one's skill(s) sure is difficult, but all can do it.

"Telos" in Greek means "end, purpose", so "finding the end in yourself"; you're right, I think I saw it in Spanish, "autotelicidad", or maybe am I making up things? Simply ignore the word and thats it.

Covertoon and Katy: I deeply understand your feelings, for the simple reason I had them myself, but got over them. I regreted so much I made those statements in the first post, I thought after to go and erase them up, but was to late, had to keep the line. No wonder it is a problem for us (although let me insist that in a personal level, there are so many exceptions that you nicely can be one; example: there's another correlation: high IQ individuals are taller in average -barred race particularities- but Mezzofanti was quite short, there you are!), cause is a problem for mankind. Maybe I believe in the healing power of truth after all. If there is a truth, certainly is better building from it. It is not differences that cause suffering, but a void ideal of equality that covers up a terrible lack of solidarity. We all love superior to us people as long they show respect and willingness to help us reach our full potential, which surely is manifested in many ways.
