I have noticed out of the people who do use 'what' as opposed to 'wut,' the former seem to have more acumen in the English language and are more well-read. Given my location, if I hadn't had the insight to study I might use the same improper pronunciation as that of the latter.

Kudos on your research skills. That seems to be a very accurate summary.

Yes, I mean, nice job of finding an article that accurately summarizes the data. I have lived in the southeast US most of my life and I can generally identify the twang that accompanies the contrast pronunciation. The shaded area on the map is indeed where you generally hear it.

To further my point! I can distinguish between a WELL and a WHALE. The person who says 'wut' cannot unless he makes some kind of ridiculous sharade. I'll leave it at that for now, sorry about all the posts, haha. |

Wut?
I don't know where you're from (somewhere in the south?), but even without aspirating the 'w' or making a "ridiculous [c]harade", my pronunciations of 'well' and 'whale' are completely distinguishable. Do you confuse SELL and SALE, or TELL and TALE? What about WELL and WAIL (which I would pronounce exactly like 'whale')?
Edit: @ the OP, you probably are aware of this but I figured I'd mention anyway that "who" is an exception here, being pronounced like "hoo" rather than "woo", which I've never heard in any dialect.

....and what about 'wine' and 'whine?' If you have a good argument to present then please do. Until then, my way of speaking is more logical. I live in Florida, I'm from southern California. I speak with a non-regional accent sprinkled with British variation of pronunciation and vocabulary.
