Memorising the dictionary is having some strange side-effects. It definitely improved my listening comprehension in German but also in French?! I haven't studied French for a long time so why the strange knock-on effect?

No obvious reason. There are some French words in German but not that many. Perhaps your memory and language comprehension have been strengthened generally?

About 10 years ago, an Indian fellow told me that it is ideal to memorize 10 words at each day in any dictionary.

Perhaps... though I've noticed my Spanish (the language I use most) has got really sloppy.
