FAQ-NL: Meaning of 'Lang niet alle winters'?
With the cold weather in The Netherlands, there is increasing expectation of a possible Elfstedentocht this year (the 11-town skating race on natural ice). The Wikipedia article includes the following sentence: 'Lang niet alle winters wordt de tocht gehouden'. The sentence generally means 'The race (or trip) has not been held every winter'. But that could be written something like 'Niet alle winters wordt de tocht gehouden' To me, the meaning 'Lang' is not clear. It could mean 'for a long time', or maybe 'along' or something like 'over the long term'. Could a native Dutch-language speaker comment on this usage of 'lang'? 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

It's difficult to translate this into English. It does not mean 'for a long time', 'along' or 'over the long term'. I looked it up in my Van Dale. It means 'far from, not nearly'. Lang niet elke winter = far from every winter I hope it helps! EDIT: Here in Flanders we usually say 'belange nie!' Maybe it's interesting to know, when you're talking with some Flemish. "Flemish" is fine, but only in the plural, like your example. "Fleming" can be singular or plural.
