There is the phenomenon of over-correction to the point of actually making more mistakes.
Example: "Just between you and I...." which should actually be "Just between you and ME..." See, little anglos have a tendancy to say "Me and my friend are going to the park." or something like that. But through constant correction by teachers and parents, they learn to say "My friend and I..." But then they go too far and banish the combination "and me" from their speech forever, without paying attention to the distinction between subject and object pronouns. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

In Scotland, it is extremely common to hear "should have went" in everyday speech.
For example, I should have went to the party. I know that the correct form is "should have gone" but I almost have to force myself to say this because "should have went" is the phrase that comes naturally to mind. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

Should of went and should have gone are both common where I live. If I say should of went, nobody even notices or cares. Maybe it's technically grammatically incorrect, but I think it's heading to the point where native speakers use both commonly, and therefore becoming the norm. I've actually never heard anyone being corrected for saying should have went.

LOL! I meant, should have went. But somehow "should of went" seems more natural than writing should have went to me. Maybe I'm spending too much time learning other languages and am forgetting English :3 Edited by ZombieKing on 01 September 2012 at 11:31pm 1 person has voted this message useful |
