I note Cesare describes himself as Canadian, and I expect the answer lies there (we are fairly extraordinary folks - I much suspect that there are brain steriods in the maple syrup). Is Latin harder than German grammatically?
I was surprised how many modern books are available in it on Amazon (such as 'Regulus' which is 'The Little Prince'). A lot of people must still be learning it. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

I'd say that the grammars are similarly difficult - Latin is more regular, but it has
some advanced grammar features German dropped. However, learning Latin is a lot easier if you're going for reading ability only. Learning to understand e. g. the noun declensions takes at most 1/10 of the time needed to learn to come up with the forms yourself on the fly while in a conversation. Latin is still commonly studied, especially in Europe. For example, Germans usually have the choice of either starting to learn French or Latin in 7th grade, and it's a mandatory choice. Students with less talent for languages are typically told to go for Latin; but so are future polyglots (Latin is a good foundation). 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

Well the thing is that I already knew a moderate amount of Latin words because of everyday English usage, but I wouldn't say that I absorbed 10,000 words in one hour, but I still learned the language fluently in one hour. I have a Latin board with lots of vocabulary, and before I acutally studied the language, I knew just "Salve", and the grammar, so for me it was very easy. The thing is that yes you need to know a lot of words when it comes to acceptable fluency, but it doesn't have to be 10,000; that's just my opinion. The important thing is to be understood and to make the best out of the language as possible.
