I think I will have a modest start to 2011 but by Febuary I should be into study mode.
This is my third TAC challenge. This is from language.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=13230&PN=14&TPN=1">20 09 and
this is
from 2010
.

French

I have some very modest goals for my French this year. I will be in maintenance mode
with the focus being to fill in any gaps in my knowledge.

Resources

Podcasts - Quick, easy and free. Endless hours of natives speaking
The Splog/Fluent Cezch spiral approach (the little black book) - I was impressed
by some ideas that Splog has put out there. Especially in regards to having
conversations with yourself until you get to something you don't know. Recording
videos/audio and keeping a little black book of notes are important parts of this
method. Essentially to fill in any gaps with my French. I'm quite excited to explore
this a little more
Yabla/Learn French by podcast/Coffee break French - Armed with a pen and a
notebook I will note and learn any important words/phrasing.

On a social interactive level I think it will be a little quiet this year. I plan to
use Skype to communicate with some exchange partners that I have met whilst being here
in Paris. Some very tentative plans have been made to return to France mid-July.
Perhaps a conversation class. Nevertheless some serious self-study this year.

German possibly Spanish probably no

I plan to take my baby steps in German. I would like to reach an A2 level and to sit a
B1 exam and pass would be the ideal. I'm very excited about using the methods I used
when I was beginning French. This is a tentative side project and if I don't feel it's
worth it or i'm not enjoying it I will stop.

Resources

Michel Thomas foundation/advanced - Always a pleasure to use Michel. He will lay
down the foundations for me.
Yabla - After studing with Michel for a bit I will watch some videos with
English and German subtitles
Assimil - A method I've been dying to try. I must decide if I will learn from
French or
from English.
Listening Reading - I may try to L-R some very simple stories.
Pimsleur
Learn in your car German - Great and affordable method

Last and not least I will belong to group KEN this year.

Hey Adrean! You're making me a bit jealous, it sounds so wonderful to pick up German as a new languge. :D

It will be exciting to follow your log this year. Good luck!

I think using French to learn a new language like German will be excellent for review. Here's a little more on what Khatzumoto calls "language laddering", just in case you might have missed it.

I've got Assimil's course on Egyptian hieroglyphics waiting patiently in the ranks (I know it may sound a bit of a strange choice, but it's just so exotic and looks so cool!). However, with the instructions all being in French, I guess Ptolemy and Cheops will have to wait just a bit longer (lol). In the meantime, I've a couple of Spanish and Russian books with instructions in German to keep me laddering away... ;)

Best of luck with the exam results, and I'm looking forward to your new adventures in German (and maybe Spanish too)!

Thanks for the comments team!

I forgot to mention two very important things I'm gonna be concentrating on this year.
The first is my French accent. I have realized that this is something not to be
neglected. The French are quite anal about accents. Thankfully I don't have a terribly
strong anglophone accent, however it's bad enough that it gets a chuckle now and again.
Hey all youse learning French don't forget to work on your accent if you don't want to
stand out too much.

How will I improve my accent? I'm gonna collect and read a number of ideas from
a variety of sources. There are books on phonology, videos on you tube, techniques like
chorusing/shadowing etc.etc. I'll take a look around and pick the method that works for
me. I've already drawn some very quick solutions, first of all I've seen some coaching
videos from an American accent coach. She is fantastic at producing the sounds but no
matter how good she is there is no disguising an accent. What does this mean? It's
gonna be very hard albeit impossible to completely remove my own accent.

The other thing I forgot to mention which is a big FOCUS is activating my
vocabulary. Essentially I'm gonna do a bit of reading and research to find out how best
to go about this. I have a small idea from watching videos on youtube and general
reading. I want to pick all the wonderful passive knowledge from my brain.

In an effort to evaluate my accent and to activate some vocab I decided to make a video
every now and again on the subject of language resources. I put up this
video on the subject of podcasts.
it's aimed at all those people who are unfamiliar with using podcasts as a study tool.
Personally at the moment it's my most valuable resource by far.

Ciao

Just to let you know I've got my little black book (it's actually a little yellow
notepad) which I'm going to use to fill all the little holes and gaping canyons in my
French. I'm going to let my wander in the French language until it finds something it
cannot say. Also I will use the little book to note common combinations of words,
words, or phrases which I understand passively but have not entered into my active
vocabulary by watching the medias. I'm very excited to start this project and I think
it will be just a little before it's fine tuned.

This year is all about activating vocabulary. I decided now to make a video now and
again on one of my favourite subjects which is 'language resources for the French
language' in the hope of activating some vocab. I hope I can introduce some French
learners to some resources which they don't know exist. I made a video about a
wonderful resource in French on youtube which is called
Fluent French Audio, I also made
a video in English if you have
trouble understanding my poor French.
