Upon reflection, my original new year's resolution of hitting 98% in Russian reading skills by February was perhaps a tad over-ambitious (lol). I put it down to the sugar rush from too much left-over Christmas cake on the day. ;)
However, I've never been a quitter, and am stubbornly determined to keep on climbing until I reach the summit of this majestic mountain of words. And I'm confident I'll get there in the end despite all the setbacks and difficulties. So from now on, I'll simply update this thread from time to time to let you know where I am in my epic journey and report how much closer I am to that initial goal! Hey Teango, you just gave me a much needed boost of good energy with your reference to Kendall Mint Cakes! I brought some of those home from the UK many, many years ago and they are minty fresh goodness incarnate!
I admire your persistence and resilience in tackling Russian - it's a tough one, but if anyone can do it, you will, for sure. Going a bit off-topic again - do they still sell these things across the pond? Yorkie It's Not For Girls My sister, knowing my penchant for snack food of foreign origin, gave me one of these for Christmas and we all had a big laugh about it. She lives near the Canadian border and can get British groceries. I don't know if there are any peculiar Russian candy bars, but that's something I'll surely investigate. I'm glad I've pepped you up with a bit of peppermint confectionery. Yorkie is still going strong here on our little island too, and Heavens to Murgatroyd, I've even seen a few girls venture a bite from time to time (lol)! As for Russian candy, the most famous I've tried is probably Алёнка: 
And it's not unusual to find yourself dipping into a bowl of Белочки in a Russian kitchen when feeling a little peckish: 
The most prevalent brand is probably Россия, which unfortunately is yet another good chocolate company that's been taken over by Nestlé (you'll also note the added touch of irony in the brand name now). They offer a variety of choccie bars, usually found taking pride of place on shelves in most Russian kiosks:
