Meeting fellow travelers... I haven't thought of that, but it should obviously be taken
into the equation. By hosting I assume you mean couch surfing? Do Philippine people
couch surf/host a lot?

Why do you travel so much? Are you a flight attendant?

English - Pretty self-explanatory. Wide-spread, allowing me to get by with it if
necessary.

Spanish - Would give me access to Central America and much of South America.

Japanese - I can't help but be drawn in by Japan, and knowing Japanese would be nice
for any travelers I come by that speak it.

Arabic - Southwest Asia is a region I find particularly interesting, so Arabic would be
a good choice. Not to mention it would give me access to north Africa.

Thai - Thailand is high on my list of places to visit, and I guess it wouldn't hurt to
have some mutual intelligibility with Lao either (if I'm not mistaken...)

I would like to travel to nearly every place in the world, so this list wouldn't help
me do that exactly, but oh well. Indonesia and Mongolia are another two countries that
are pretty high on my list. South Asia interests me more than any other region, but I
guess I'd just try to do my best using English! Here I chose 5 languages that would
give me at least some geographical spread, but in reality I'd probably end up choosing
some more specific or obscure languages to focus on a certain part of the world.

A pilot? Then why do you move so often? I think you're the only one I've heard of who moves more often than me.

Interesting language list leosmith. I think i understand your intentions for learning these languages :)

My list would be the following:

English
French
Thai
Japanese
Arabic

Pretty much in that order, I like Japan and the culture is unique, not into comics or cartoons though. French is a lovely language that still has ALOT of usefulness even in my country. Thai is a good one for SE Asia and is really difficult. Our countries practically neighbour each other but the languages share absolutely no recognizable cognates. Arabic also facinates me but I suppose that is a little bit imprecise so i would opt for MSA. I think that would get me by in the Middle East. A side note; on my travels to several Middle Eastern Countries I am surprised at how clever the Arabs are with languages. I have met people in Qatar for example that could speak Vietnamese scary good!

English for everything else.

English: for business travel or summer holidays in UK, US, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and India.

French: in France, Switzerland, Belgium, and Quebec (Canada).

Italian: worthwhile to learn Italian, though hardly spoken outside Italy.

Japanese: only spoken in Japan, but necessary for foreigners to learn it, because English won't work well there.

Thai: maybe not an important language, but rather useful for tourists who wanna stay for a long while to enjoy their lives.

I don't have a job so all I do is travel. Certainly not a pilot!

Dang you polyglHot - now I'm even more jealous:) Personally, I find 6months/year about all I can handle, so I guess
I have no reason.
