From Korean To Classical Chinese | ||

I've been studying Korean for some time now, and as part of serious study of the language I am of course learning the Hanja. I also have an interest in learning Classical Chinese, but at the present I have substantially less interest in learning any modern Chinese dialect. How possible is it to spring board from Korean Hanja to Classical Chinese? Are any resources available, especially ones which use Korean pronunciations (which I would prefer to use, both since I all ready know them, and because the tonality of Chinese pronunciations intimidates me)?

It's a long time since I used it but I am pretty sure Rouzer's A New Practical Primer of Literary Chinese gives Chinese, Japanese and Korean prononciations.

Totally possible. My suggestion would be to first focus on learning the Hanja as used in Korean really well and keep working on your Korean. After that, you can look at materials written for Koreans to learn literary Chinese but you will also get a lot of mileage out of something written for students of modern Chinese. Just skip the section of translations into modern Chinese and ignore the (usually) Mandarin pronunciation. I suggest starting with: 1. Three Character Classic 2. Koreans have used the Thousand Character Classic a lot over the years. I think there are better places to start but you will find a lot of different primers on this in Korea. 3. Classical Chinese: A Basic Reader published by Princeton University Press looks worthwhile. 3 persons have voted this message useful | |||

All the resources mentioned in this thread are good. I personally have the Rouzer book, and it is quite good. However, I don't know if Classical Chinese: A Basic Reader is what you want. I have a copy of Vol. 1 on my desk and it has no Korean in it.
Obviously, if your Korean is good enough you'll want to use textbooks aimed at teaching Korean speakers. They're likely to be better than what you'll find in English. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

먼저 한글로 뉴스나 책들을 제대로 읽을수있고 난 다음에 한문고전들을 공부하도록 하시지요. 정 고집을 부리겠다면 어쩔수없겠으나 구해 공부하다보면 생각이 바뀔거예요. 한국어로 신문등을 읽고 뉴스를 듣는데 별문제가 없다면 그때 한자를 공부할수있는 다른 방법들은 많아요. 여긴 언어이론쪽과 유럽어 계열쪽은 상당히 강하고 제대로된 자원들이 많아 좋긴한데.... 중국어, 한국어, 일본어는 생각보다 빈약하군요. 여하튼, 파이팅!! ------------- --사서삼경 [四書三經]: 사서(四書)는 <논어(論語)>, <대학(大學)>, <중용(中庸)>, <맹자(孟子)>의 네 경전이고, 삼경(三經)은 <시경(詩經)>, <서경(書經)>, <주역(周易)>의 세 경서. --오경(五經)은 삼경에 <예기(禮記)>, <춘추(春秋)>를 더한 것임. --명심보감(明心寶鑑): 조선시대의 대표적인 초학 입문용 교재로 중국 고전에서 선현들의 금언(金言)·명구(名句)를 편집해서 만든 책임. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

고전책들은 한국내 애지간한 서점들, 미국 한국서점들, 아님 온라인서점에서 구입할수있음.
한자가 되면 그냥 간단히 중요한 부분들을 한번 쑥 흩어보고, 아주 유명한 부분들은 몇번 써보기 연습을 재미삼아 해볼수있겠지만, 그걸 가지고 요즘 한문공부하는 사람들은 고리타분해서 거의 없어요. 고사성어라면 좀 재미삼아 몇번 써보거나 년초 좋은걸 하나 골라 붓글씨로 써 걸어놓을수있겠지만... 모르는 외국인들이야 아직 개념이 없으니 그것가지고 한문을 공부하겠다고 설칠수있겠지만, 고생을 사서하는것인데.... 한자를 정 공부하려면 중고과목 한자교과서들도 있고, 한자시험준비용 책들도 많을테지만, 뭐니해도 한글과 한자를 섞어 쓴 책들이 많이 있으니 독서식으로 읽다보면 많은 한자들에 저절로 익숙하게 될수있긴하나 먼저 한국어 자체를 제대로 모르면, 뭐가 무슨말인지 알지도 못해 많이 헤메기만 하게 될것인데.... 고전을 정 제대로 공부하려면 먼저 한국어를 한글로 제대로 습득한후에, 상용한자들을 습득하고, 그후에 고전을 공부하는것이 순서일것임. 여하튼 첨부터 한자에 고집하는 외국인 초보자들이 엄청 많은데, 잘못 한문으로 빠지면 몇년간 미로로 빠질수있습니다.
