The keyword technique uses the reminder principle. You use a sound-like word in your own language to remind you the foreign word. Then, we use a visual or verbal association to link the keyword (sound-like word in your native language) with the meaning (word in your native language).

You are right. This is not perfect. In my opinion, this technique is useful with difficult words and only as a provisional crutch. We need to get rid of them as soon as possible. As you say, it is important to learn the correct pronunciation to avoid interferences.

Probably your reminder principle is a good technique between two languages without such similarities or between your native language and a foreign one (not between the foreign ones) but persoannly I have to fight against that sound-like words muddle.

I understand. I think those vocabulary tricks and mnemonics are useful when you have to learn long lists. For example when you have to pass examinations.

Maybe these techniques are useful too when you are a real beginner or you want to fix a difficult word.
