About 6 months ago I discovered Memrise, which is
basically a very well-designed online flashcard system. There are thousands of words for
several languages, and if they don't support a language you are trying to study, you can
contribute your own flashcard set to add to the database. I really like it. Browsing this
form, I also just discovered Anki, which I'm playing around with right now. It has its
merits as well.

Has anyone else tried Memrise? Thoughts?

The mandarin example is really well done, combining vocabulary teaching (with mnemonics) and memorization. If the other languages have also this feature, it would be interesting for an English speaker to give a try.

I have tried it. I like it; but, the Japanese still has some bugs. It even gives a French
definition instead of English. I know they are new and working hard to clean up the
decks. I will definitely go back and use it.

thanks for the Memrise link, it's a really good way to learn some characters I think, and it's quite fun just to pass the
time. I like some of their character descriptions, such as the one for Pig : A PERSON WHO DOES it on the Side with a
SMALL DOG is certainly a PIG. Hehehe.

edit : I'm addicted to this now. I like how the game shows new words in a logical way, first a simple character and
then a character containing the previous one, and so on. And also I like how it mixes similar characters such as
eight and man or to pick and vegetable.

I was using it extensively for a while. I created some FSI Chinese courses, so far I've finished adding all the vocab for modules 1-5, i think. I've also started putting up the vocab for the Princeton Russian course, too, up to maybe lesson 50 if anyone's interested.

I use this website and have discovered it to be a really good tool for building
vocabulary, especially for things such as Japanese Kanji.

I started using the website as an "experiment" so to say, as I have epilepsy of the
temporal lobe - that part of the brain being where memories are stored, I've found that
gradually as my seizures have decreased in number, my memory has obviously increased
and I can go to memorise somewhat 90 to 95% of the words in my "memory garden" without
hesitance, whereas when I was having seizures at high rates, I could barely remember
anything more than 3 words at a time.

So I definitely think that overall, the website is very good and especially with what
they've just done - with the little tweaking - it's got a lot better and I'm sure it
will in the future!
