If you have the time I would be interested to know your perspective on learning to read Japanese given your knowledge of Chinese characters.

@g-bod
Knowing Kanji certainly helps my vocabulary building, esp. of nouns, and reading very formal Japanese writings where more Kanji would appear. In one extreme case, a piece of official document from ancient Japan was shown in an NHK documentary which then gave subtitles in modern Japanese on screen but I could just read it directly as it was almost identical to ancient Chinese. But both languages have evolved in their own ways over the years. (Sadly!) Now there is no way to understand any Japanese sentence by knowing Kanji only. I consider verbs(usually single Kanji with 訓読み), adverbs(usually avoid Kanji), and conjunctions(almost no Kanji) the most vital elements in understanding Japanese sentences, probably because the language is very subtle overall so it needs all sorts of bits instead of full Kanji words to twist and tweak the meaning. :)

I like your insight! I've heard that Japanese can be very intricate with it's meanings. One day I hope I'll be able to recognize its many levels!
