NickJS - Team 德
Welcome to my 2012 TAC log, both team-mates and other forum members. This my first TAC, however I do have another personal log here too which you may have seen at some point. Unfortunately my posts were rather infrequent there though, simply because I forgot I had it during my university exams! Well, I think that is enough rambling and now I'll get right to it and state my aims for TAC'12. Main Language of Study. - Mandarin - Currently High A1, my aim for this language is to reach B1. Many hours listening clocked for this language, therefore I shall set an aim to focus on speaking more, at least double to what I currently do. I am also hoping to test out some new methods of learning such as the Goldlist method and some others that I have taken note of and not had chance to test out yet to see if they work for me. Secondary Languages of Study - Norwegian - Russian* - Cantonese (Note: Of the 3 above languages I decided to choose the language labelled with * for this TAC (Further notes on Page 2) I shall also list all of my physical resources for the above languages that I am studying, so that everyone knows what I am using: Mandarin: - Teach Yourself Mandarin Chinese (2010 edition with audio) - New Practical Chinese Reader Textbook/Workbook 1 (2nd edition with audio) - Schaum's Outline of Chinese Grammar (2009) - Chinese Characters: Learn & Remember 2,178 Characters and Their Meanings (2009) - Reading & Writing Chinese: Simplified Character Edition (3rd Ed. 2003) - First Thousand Words in Chinese (2006) - Easy Peasy Chinese: Mandarin Chinese for Beginners (2007) - Collins Easy Learning Dictionaries - Collins Easy Learning Mandarin Chinese Dictionary (2009) - Lonely Planet - Phrasebook - The Besieged City (Sinolingua, 1st Ed. 2008, with audio) - Making out in Chinese (Tuttle, 2003) - FLR Mandarin, 1st Course (Other resources include phone applications and also websites such as ChinesePod/Lang- 8/Youtube videos for audio/MDBG.net) Russian - Teach Yourself Russian (2003 with audio) - Teach Yourself Beginners Russian Script (2003) - Schaum's Outline of Russian Grammar (2nd Ed. 2009) - Collins Gem Russian Dictionary (2004) (Other resources include phone applications such as radios, dictionaries and phrase apps. Also youtube videos and other misc websites for anything else.) So, I hope it is going to be a good year with plenty of focus and motivation for everyone, so lets make the time count and if you wish to know more about any of the above or following posts, please comment. and lastly, thanks for reading! Yesssssss, Russian~ We should all learn that ;] (I keep saying it, but I've never gotten
around to beginning it aside from borrowing an old Teach Yourself book from the library...). But anyway, good luck on your goals for next year! I tell you something, I've been listening to so much Russian music this week - Its awesome! I also got a new phone and just loaded tonnes of Mandarin/Russian music on it and lots of radio stations too (my friends think I'm weird for having no English music lol!) Gotta love foreign language music... I have the Hercules soundtrack in Hebrew, which I'm kind of in love with~ Do you have any Mandarin recs? Or Russian, for that matter, though it's the Mandarin I'm really after. I have to admit, I find it a lot more enjoyable than English music now lol. I just watched some of the Hercules you mentioned...It actually really suits the film, I was surprised when I heard it! Good luck on your studies of all of your languages! Have you heard of the Boya Chinese
(博雅汉语)series? It's a textbook series similar to the NPCR except it was created to follow the HSK guidelines, with the end of each book corresponding to being able to pass a certain level of the HSK. I think there are 6 books in the entire series (and from my understanding 2 books for the Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced levels respectively). Definitely sounds like an interesting series - I checked on Amazon in the UK and they have all of them from the looks of it, quite surprised I've not heard of it before :P. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||||||||

According to my professor (who greatly dislikes the NPCR series) the entire NPCR series (that's all 6 books) will only bring you to about the B1-B2 level, equivalent to the Boya intermediate series book 1 or 2 and HSK level 2. So I suppose it's all about what your goals are. I like the NPCR because it builds a bit on previous knowledge and it gradually weens us off of pinyin and right into characters (in later books), but I have no personal experience with Boya so I can't say anything about it! 1 person has voted this message useful |
