Has anyone here used the Assimil Arabic course? If so, what did you
think of it?

Hated it.

I've enjoyed Assimil in other languages, and will continue to use them moving forward.
But contrary to a previous post, I found that the speakers spoke artificially slow and exaggerated throughout the course. I completed 35 out of 77 lessons, but listened ahead
to see if it ever got better. It did not.

Have you ever played a record backwards (for those of you who remember what a record
is)? That is what the audio sounded like. It was painful to listen to, and the
listening/shadowing is usually the best part of Assimil.

This was for the French-based version, which is rumored to be better than the
Engliah-based one.

I do have an Assimil "Guide de Poche" for Tunisian Arabic, also French-based. The
recordings are pleasant, but the Guide-series are more like phrasebooks than language
courses.

Hated it.....

I'm with kanewai on this one. I tried so hard to like Assimil Arabic, I really did. I attempted to use both the French
and the older English editions. It is just SO painful to listen to. I played it for some native Arabic speakers and they
just laughed at it. The dialogues are so slow and unnatural until you get up past lesson 50 - nobody I know has
lasted this long though!
