As an aside (if I may be permitted) forgive me if my French is not good enough to pick up
on register, but wasn't the reviewer writing in an overtly hyperbolic, even somewhat
pompous, style? Does that go to credit in French writing or, as in English, does it show
that he is a bit of a nutter?

"Pompous" might be too strong a word but, yes, he used some phrases which might be deemed as "refined" (sorry, if it's not very accurate, I can't think of a better word right now). But clearly, this doesn't make him a nutter, at least in "normal"/educated circles.
What's interesting is that he mixes it with more colloquial words ("franchement nul, vraiment chouette") and some clearly ironic sentences, making his message a pleasant one to read.

Thanks Itikar for your message about the new version of the old audio tapes. This is great news !

Thanks akkadboy - these are differences that are (at least for me) often hard to pick up.

Alang - my only experience of spoken Latin is Evan Millner's Latinum, Hans Orberg, the TY
Get Started in Latin set and Leo Latinus - all of which are restored classical Latin
spoken by people coming from English, Danish or German. The Assimil Le Latin is very
similar but perhaps a bit 'sweeter' due to the female accent and the underlying (but not
ridiculously strong like the previous Assimil) French accent.

Can't wait for the new recording of the old Assimil - looks good!

Well, at assimil.com it says that the Italian old version is not available ("Temporairement indisponible...").

A very good source for spoken Latin is, of all things, Rosetta Stone. You get a fair amount of audio in appropriate rendering - c(k)aesar, v(w)ir(r) - and a unique chance to experience it as a living language. I have only used Version 2, but there is also a Version 3 edition.
