Today I put in word number 3,870 in my Anki German stack (it took me about two years to get to this point). I have a bunch of stacks made by other people that I downloaded from other places, but this stack is words I came across on my own---in books, programs, whatever---as long as I didn't know it, looked it up, and put it in my own Anki stack (I usually include a sample sentence too).
So---how many have you managed to put in so far? I remember reading a post a while back with someone who had put in 20,000 words or something... makes my 3,000 look really small.
What's your number?

I have under 2000 items but these are mostly sentences. And I delete a lot.

I don't think there's really a limit. It all comes down to how long you have been using
the program and also, whether you keep in contact with your languages outside of the
SRS. Making your own cards slows the whole thing down a bit, but I think it's actually
better this way. So, yours is 4k, mine 9k and other guy's might be 20k, but it doesn't
mean that you can tell which of us is doing more reps on a daily basis, at least not
with the SM algorithm that Mnemosyne uses. On the other hand, if I'm not mistaken Anki
does have, or used to have a limit to how big un interval can grow (5 years), so this
might affect the load you can manage in the long run, but I'm not sure about that. If
there are people with 10,000 cards, probably not.

I don't know if there's a limit - earlier today when I reviewed my cards I got up to 6-7 years for some words.

It seems that they removed that restriction a couple of versions ago. I didn't make much
sense anyway.

My number is... wait a sec...396,000 cards. I have a deck on grammar (1700 items), which I'm filling in by myself, and other ones which are just the result of automatic import from online and offline dictionaries. Now I'm dealing with only a little part of those—134,000, to be precise—containing examples of 12,000 of the most frequent words. It's a lifelong work indeed )

Total, I have about 150,000 cards made, and about 130,000 that I have learned in my
rotation. ~40000 for German, ~20000 for Chinese, ~15000 each for French, Italian, ~10000
for Dutch, Swedish, and Spanish, ~5000 for Icelandic and Portuguese. Since I have both
directions for each card, this is really halved for each language, though.
It really is just a process. I have been using these for about 2 years, and when I am
actively learning a language, I try to do 100 words a day. If you haven't seen these
sites yet, I would recommend http://www.italian-flashcards.com/ (there are similar sights
for like 10 languages). I just bought the membership, so it has sound for all the words,
which has been helpful. Unfortunately, you can't export the words, so I have literally
typed in every single one of those cards, haha.
