I have studied Danish for 3 years now, so I also want to give you my impression and advice on Danish. How much useful Danish is for you depends on your personal activities. I would say, if you have a special interest in Danish, then learn this language.

Danish pronounciation is tricky because it's irregular, so be prepared to do more audiotraining with Danish than it would be necessary for a language like Italian. The pronounciatrion is not phonetic so you write differently than you speak. So it needs some time of study to understand Danish pronounciation rules.

Danish verbs have very simple conjugations because per tense you have to learn only one verbform. For example it's

skrive = to write (Present Tense)

jeg skriver
du skriver
hun/han skriver
vi skriver
I/De skriver
de skriver

It's the same pattern with the other tenses. This makes learning Dansih verbs easier than for exaple verbs of Romance languages.

Danish vocabulary has similarities with English, German and Dutch and of course with the other Scandinavian languages Swedish and Norwegian.

Norwegian Bokmâl is VERY close to Danish and in Southern Sweden there is a region called "Skâne" where people can understand Danish perfectly.

So, if you decide for Danish, I wish you good luck with the learning process!

It warms my heart to see all these positive statements about my native langue.:)No one
saying: It is too much trouble for such a small langue and they all speak English
anyway or Why learn Danish when you can chose Swedish or Norwegian which sound
much nicer.
I of cause totally agree with the others. Go for it! I would be glad to help you.

It has been interesting and somewhat amusing to read about the good and bad points
about learning Danish. Some of the things I have never thought about.

We have pronounciation rules?! ;-)

I never really noticed all the different forms of forming the plural in Swedish, but
before you start to think that it is a lot easier with Danish, you should know that we
also have more than one way.

There is a few irregular ones, but most words get either the -er ending or -
e
ending. Ex: bil, biler (car, cars) and hus , huse (house , houses)

I am new to the forum. I think it is great. I have already found lots of good advice
from simply reading the treads, thanks to all of you. :-)
I am sorry for my lack of knowledge of proper linguistic terminology.
