The good news is the language is pretty straightforward, and the stories are interesting enough to get my kids to watch Little Einsteins in French. The bad news is the French subtitles are totally different from the French audio dub. They are obviously based on the English audio track and made separately. Oh well... still a pretty good resource.

He's 23 months. I brought the show up on my iPad when we visited a few weeks ago. He's captivated by the show in English. His expressions varied from puzzled to interested to contorted. The whole family often acts out the "pat pat" sequence leading up to "blast off" that opens every episode. The wheels were definitely turning as my wife and I acted out the "blast off" sequence and started repeating some of the French words. Note, his English level is such that a couple months earlier, he called the show "pat pat" because the characters repeat those words in the opening of each show. He doesn't watch a single episode. He watches all of them. With on demand TV, there are about 4 rotating episodes available. These vary over time. During this visit, I taught him the expression "over there" in English. Based on this thread, I bought a Little Einsteins DVD to see what it's like and I love
it. I have a ton of TV shows and movies in German, but my German level isn't enough to be able to watch and understand a whole lot as yet. But with Little Einsteins, I can watch it in German with all subtitles off and I can actually understand 80-90% of what is being said the first time around. I'll be looking to find a couple more DVDs. I got the first one from Amazon.com, but I may have to go to Amazon.de to get others. For "me", this looks like a good way to help with my listening comprehension and as a jumping off point before moving to other shows like Friends and movies 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I remember the Baby Einstein series also about ten years ago, which were directed towards babies and toddlers like you mentioned. I also recall the program was not recommended, as parents had the impression of just placing their toddlers in front of the t.v. and ignore them without any work. The expectation was the children would learn everything just by watching t.v. I believe the marketing was for educational videos for babies and toddlers to improve their I.Q., or something like that. The news covered it one time and asked for evidence, but the Disney representative could not provide anything. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

From what I saw the video series is just dubbed over and not specified to learning a
particular language. Julia Pimsleur has a program I mentioned a couple years back called Little Pim. It is not just videos, but little booklets and audio. I guess more of mini immersion for children. Regarding the Disney Einstein series. I suggest for other members to google and look for reviews on the program before purchasing anything. The show is not specifically geared towards language learning.
The only reason I like it is that being a children's show, they don't speak as fast and the range of vocabulary is smaller than shows for older kids or adults So for me, at the level I'm at, it's easier to follow vs shows like Friends 2 persons have voted this message useful |
