I think automatic translation is fairly normal until your knowledge of the language is much stronger. At least that was my experience.

So my advice would be to just keep reading and not worry about it too much. I suspect you won't keep translating when you have read say 10000 or 20000 pages.

Maybe you're not very interested in what you're reading... I find it almost impossible to concentrate and comprehend
when I'm not interested in the material. I highly recommend Miguel de Unamuno. I read his book Niebla in
Spanish and it was not difficult in style, but the ideas were really interesting. Maybe you just need to find something
that really engages you and makes you want to find out what happens. :)

That's where the accompanying audio comes in handy. It will force you to read without translating, and improve your listening comprehension too.

When I was learning Finnish going through one book like that was enough for me. Well, it was the Da Vinci Code, so it's not exactly a small book either :)
