This is probably a subjective question and is more on the topic of general studying than specifically languages, but when do you all study your language and when do you find you retain the information better?

In general, when I study for engineering exams I usually go right up to when I go to sleep and I find that the next morning (when I take the exam) it is right there in my mind as if I just saw the material. I would love to wake up an hour early to study my language (I feel like it would give me more time to cover more material throughout the day) but I always felt that my mind is more tuned to night studying, so I never bothered.

Do any of you have success with studying your languages (or any other subject matter) early in the morning?

I try to study during all of my waking hours. For example I read my Bible in French when
I first get up, listen to German or French radio/music/lessons in the car on my way to
work. Then there's some more formal study plus reading throughout the rest of the day.
And I usually read some more (often in French) as I go to bed.

So I can't really say whether one time is better than another time for me because I try
to expose myself to my languages all day long.

I read in the morning and watch a film in the evenings.

Actual "study?" Always in the morning. I get up really early and it's easier to concentrate when no one is awake and nothing distracting has happened yet.

Exposure to the language? Any free time I can get.

I have a hard time studying languages at night - I'm lazier, and don't always have the
motivation to work hard. Which is strange; normally I'm much more productive in the
evenings, and when I have to write a paper, for example, I do better when I work late
into the night.

One of my benchmarks is when I reach the point where it's a pleasure to read in the
evening, or when I'm tired.

My mind is deteriorated in the morning and somehow gets better during the night--thus
more study until I go to sleep at 04h00 or 05h00.

For me it depends whether I have to work or not.
When I have to work I normally have only time in the evenings and I kind of like late
evenings especially in summer to do some language study.
When I don't have to go anywhere I like studying in the morning and also in the evening.
I'm actually always getting up early and like tastyonions says, it's nice when no-one
else is up (i live in a flat share so it can be quite annoying when the others are awake
and loud in the kitchen...)

It's very intersting that I'm sometimes VERY motivated in the evening just when I ought
to go to bed... I'm motivated to do all kinds of things I normally don't really like, but
I'm tired and really need some sleep. So I can't sleep and the next day the motivation is
away... ^^
