Thanks for the tip. I've found a few books in Portuguese taking place on the islands, actually. I'm reading "O homem que contava" at the moment, but as soon as I'm done with that, I'll start digging into some CV-related books. I always find that I get more out of a trip if I know more about the place in question.

As a speaker of both Portuguese and Papiamento, I'd say I don't understand the text immediately, before any analysis. I'd need to reflect upon grammar and find out where creolization altered grammar, for instance. Other than that, I believe it's like another Romance language for me, at which I'd get reading skills after being familiarized with the most used clitics, short verbs etc.
