Seems like you're reading quite a variety of stuff in Italian. Interesting that you mention this cheese story, as I saw a video about it while at an Italian friend's house a few weeks ago. Some great Emilia-Romagna accents in there!

Yeah, since I'm not so much learning the language as incorporating it into my life, I end up reading/watching/listening to just about anything that interests me... which ranges from occultism to cheese. ;)

Thanks for the link! I've put it into my to-read folder to check it out when I have a moment. I look forward to seeing if I understand anything at all when people aren't speaking standardised Italian. My bet is on "no".

Il Tredicesimo Apostolo is very good. You should try to get Tutti Pazzi per Amore, it is very funny.

Thanks, rdearman! Comedy might still be a bit over my head, since you usually need to keep up very well in order to get the joke, but I'll look into it! And if I can't keep up, I can always try it again later. :)

WEEK IN REVIEW: 30 MARCH - 5 APRIL

BUFFY L'AMMAZZAVAMPIRI

As always, I'm only learning the most useful vocabulary...

I have been keeping up with my cards, though, which means that I have finished another episode. I haven't watched that episode yet, but I've watched two others. The next episode I watch will be the one I've been working on. I'll probably let these cards mature for another week and watch that episode towards the end of the week, if I'm not swamped with things to do when the in-laws arrive.

LO HOBBIT

When I was unwell, I did not keep up with my reading. I've now caught up and finished chapter five.

MUSIC

It has been a very long time since I added any music cards, so I only get two or three to review per week. Thus, I decided to listen through all of the songs from start to finish. I haven't listened to any of them since I added the cards and I was happy to note that I understood essentially 100%.

NATIVE MEDIA

I read:

La famiglia per Gesù non era sacra, a 745 word article about marriage.

Ecco cinque storie di donne che si sono inventate un lavoro, a 540 word article about women who created their own work niches.

Elisabetta, la signora della biodinamica, a 446 word article about biodynamic viticulture.

È sbagliato fare sesso prima di una gara?, a 366 word blog entry on the effect of abstinence on athletic results.

I watched:

A video about cheese recommended by garyb. I was really surprised to be able to follow it very well, even on a word-for-word basis. The local accents were either pretty mild or my Italian is just not good enough yet to distinguish between Emilia-Romagna and Standard Italian.

The last few episodes of the first season of Il Tredicesimo Apostolo (à circa 50 min each).

The two episodes of the second season of Il Tredicesimo Apostolo. You might say that I'm a bit hooked, although less so to the second season so far.

Serena e buona Pasqua a tutti!

WEEK IN REVIEW: 6 - 12 APRIL

This week. This week I didn't actually sit down and have a peaceful moment to myself from Tuesday to Sunday. From Thursday through Sunday, I literally got out of bed, and then did not sit down except for breakfast and lunch, until I collapsed into bed around ten o'clock. Alas, it's not because I've had nice physical work to do, but rather 500 stressful chores to run between until my chest and muscles ache from the stress. All language study, exercise schedules, and just about everything else has of course suffered.

Today is my day of recovery, though, so I'm lying in bed with my laptop and a glass of juice, watching Il Tredicesimo Apostolo. I'm hoping to keep up the Italian (and other more prioritised languages) this week despite visiting in-laws.

WEEK IN REVIEW: 13 - 19 APRIL

It has been a pretty busy week, with 12 hour days of socialising, but I have nevertheless had some time for Italian. My favourite new word this week is ammettiamolo, which is actually not so much a new word since I already knew ammettere (admit). It's the imperative first person plural with a pronoun tacked on, as one does with the imperative and the infinitive. "Let us admit it", or, perhaps more fluidly translated, "Let's face it". My favourite new phrase is the disgustingly accurate colla di pesce, meaning "gelatine" but literally translating to "fish glue". Oh, yum... hand me some strawberry flavoured sugar-water with glue of fish, please.

BUFFY L'AMMAZZAVAMPIRI

I watched the episode I had prepared for these past two weeks using subs2srs. Then I watched the following episode. I didn't really feel that my understanding was so much higher after studying the episode for two weeks that it's actually worth it to continue with the subs2srs for Buffy L'Ammazzavampiri. Indeed, the phrases stick better in my head when I've listened to them repeatedly, but I don't really feel that the advantage is significant enough given the amount of work involved.

This was more or less verified when I got a painful case of food poisoning and watched six more episodes in a row (in Italian, of course, without subtitles). I understand this one particular series enough now that I even have time to reflect on tings like "huh, I didn't know that was the second person singular imperative form of that verb" while watching.

I'll probably keep watching without the subs2srs element, and pick subs2srs back up later with an Italian original and closed captions.

NATIVE MEDIA

I read:

Trecce di pane ai semi di anice — 437 words about aniseed bread. I saved the recipe to give it a go in the week to come.

5 consigli per allenarsi come un professionista — 1,046 words about training like a professional runner. I've consequently decided that I definitely don't want to train like a professional.

Che Paura — 663 words about overcoming fear.

I watched:

I finished season two of Il Tredicesimo Apostolo. It wasn't as good as the first, but good nevertheless. The way it sets up for a third season is pretty exciting, so I'm a bit disappointed that there isn't one.

Thanks for your log. It's very inspiring to me so much that I'm going to start doing a Selena flash cards. I
thought that your Buffy flash cards were brilliant so you inspired me to do flash cards for my favorite movie.
Thank you so much.
