A huge thanks to mrwarper who has sent us a backup containing most of the posts that went missing over the last week (27th February, 3:13am to 3rd March, 11:34pm). I've added these below in order of date posted:

Dia daoibh, guys! Did we come up with a challenge for February (maybe I missed it)? If not, how about we post something relatively quick and easy, given the few days remaining. One idea that comes to mind is to share or find a colorful (but not too vulgar or offensive) idiom in your target language?? Here's one I read recently that made me laugh:

"Ní dhéanfadh an saol capall rása d'asal." (you can't make a racehorse out of donkey)

I think this is somewhat similar to the old English expression "you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear".

Any other funny or bizarre Celtic expressions you've encountered in your travels or can find online?

Edited by eyðimörk on 27 February 2015 at 12:50pm:

I'm not a member of the team, but I thought I'd contribute any way to keeping the ball rolling, since the Celtic team has a tendency to stay rather quiet:

Edan tri deiz a skuizh pep den: gant glav, gant gwreg ha gant estren.
Within three days any man tires: of rain, of his wife and of foreign lands.

Ar wreg a zo berr a lostenn.
The wife is of short petticoat.
Meaning that she is a jealous wife. The petticoat of a jealous wife is of course short so as to not get in the way of her feet while she stalks her supposedly unfaithful husband. ;)

Edit: I remembered two funny ones I've actually encountered in the "wild", rather than as curiosities:

Aet eo ar moc'h bihan war ar gwinizh du.
The little pig has gotten into the buckwheat.
Someone's in a bad mood.

Aet eo ar moc'h bihan d'ar gêr.
The little pig has gone home.
Someone has reconciled.

I thought I posted a February challenge. Apparently I didn't, so colourful idiom it is. Thanks, Teango!

Actually, this proverb was my first encounter with the Irish language, as it was featured in the Encarta Encyclopedia (senior citizens might remember it). Every language had a few examples like "yes", "no", the numbers from 1 to 10, and a proverb and this was the one for Irish. So, here it goes:

Ní hé lá na gaoithe lá na scolb.
A windy day is not a day for thatching (the roof).

Probably, it means something like it's very important to go with the flow and find the right time for doing things.

Oh wow, I thought I was the only one who remembered that! I must've played with Encarta
for hours...And only the Irish and Dutch proverbs remain in my head.

The Dutch was "Wie goed doet goed ontmoet"

Foghlaimeoir nua mé, so I'd best claim this chestnut and take it to heart. I've been feeling like I can't quite say anything yet.

Is fearr Gaeilge briste, ná Béarla cliste.
Broken Irish is better than clever English.

Not so much an idiom as a platitude, particularly as I was able to dissect it without pain, but oh so applicable at the moment.

Posted by Josquin on 28 February 2015 at 2:44pm:

Yeah, I remember that, too! :)

Good to see another person who also spent countless hours of their youth with Encarta! :)

Is it too late to join? I've recently started learning Irish, and although I'm a member of Team Rätsel I'd like to make Irish a secondary focus for 2015.

Posted by jeff_lindqvist on 03 March 2015 at 8:23pm

It's never too late to join! Will you use your Team Rätsel log for your Irish studies as well?

Tell us more about how you're learning Irish!

Posted by jbadg76421 on 03 March 2015 at 11:34pm

Yeah, I think I'll use my log for both.

Well, so far I've been playing with Duolingo and Memrise, and today Learning Irish arrived. I plan on tackling Irish the way I did with German and French...that is, massive input. I was watching the German series Stromberg today (basically the German version of The Office)...I first watched it about 6 months ago, and I almost cried with joy because I understood most of it. So if I can ever reach that point in Irish, I'll be quite pleased!

Once again, I'd like to wish mrwarper a big go raibh maith agat / diolch / tapadh leat from us all for helping us out through these recent forum difficulties.

The post where I welcomed jbadg76421 is missing, but since he's taking part in the TAC, he apparently saw the post. Welcome!

By the way, there's still time to finish the February challenge. If anyone has an idea for a March challenge, post it here!

I know that some in the Scandinavian team find writing challenges boring, so something else is perfectly OK. The important thing is that we spend time with the language, in one way or the other. Some days I do grammar exercises, and other days I watch programs on youtube whilst reading the English subtitles. And then there's music.

Hope everyone is having a good time with their target language!

Mrwarper has since sent us another backup file which contains these further two missing posts. I've now added these to our big list above. Thanks for reminding me, Jeff, and welcome to the gang, jbadg76421!

Who's up for a March challenge? I quite liked Jeff's idea of including something musical this month - any good ideas? Perhaps we could all post a link to a song in our target language (either original or translation)...here's one I like to play to my students: Avicii Vs Lurgan - "Wake Me Up" as Gaeilge (see TG Lurgan for more fun covers like these).
