Hi guys,
I just came back from my trip in Spain and enjoyed so much the experience that I want to repeat the same thing in Portugal... with Portuguese! To whom followed my Spanish studies, I learnt it in this way: - listened to an intermediate podcast for 2 weeks - listened to an advanced podcasts for 2 weeks - listened to many native podcasts for 2 months (and youtube videos) - took 20 hours of tutoring with Italki. I want to do more or less the same. With some difference. I don't want to use anymore the podcasts aimed to learners for this language. I target the Portuguese of Portugal in the beginning and after 1 - 2 months I will start to listen also to other accents. So this is what I would like to do: - listen to formal Portuguese (news, documentaries etc) for 1 - 2 months (since I noticed that the formal register of the various latin languages are more similar then their informal one), and that will be my total beginner phase. - take 1 - 2 lessons with Italki tutors to learn the pronunciation that seems to me as difficult as the French one - watch Portuguese youtube videos and listen to podcasts with informal registers - read Portuguese - 1 month before to go to Portugal (I don't know when) I will take tutoring. But maybe I will also find some language partners. So, can anyone suggest me podcasts and resources to start according to my plans? I don't know of any podcasts with Iberian Portuguese (although I'll be watching the
replies!) but I can recommend the tv show Portuguêses Pelo Mundo, available on youtube. The show follows people who live abroad as they walk around their adopted city- it's a really simple concept but I find it pretty entertaining. The register is informal but not overly so and the range of subjects can be broad but still of general interest. I've watched a lot of O Mundo Segundo os Brasileiros, the Brazilian equivalent. 3 persons have voted this message useful | |

For Iberian Portuguese: check out the Centro Virtual Camões "Aprender português" page for some great supplements to whatever course material you may use. They have great monolingual listening and reading material for all levels. In the "a ler" page look for "Era uma vez um rei" and "A aventura dos descobrimentos". These are two series with text and audio intended for children that are very useful for learners. Also, Deutsche Welle- Learning by Ear; Aprender de ouvido has about 80 hours of natural conversational Portuguese in a radio play format with downloadable mp3's and pdf transcripts. Scroll down for a link to the English or French page where you can get the English or French versions. You can make your own bilingual texts with audio. The Portuguese is Mozambican, but Mozambican Portuguese follows Iberian conventions, vocabulary and the pronunciation is more similar to Portugal than Brazil, in my opinion. História do Dia also has children's stories in Iberian Portuguese with audio, text and an English translation available.

As said above, I would recommend RTP. It is basically the RTVE of Portugal, and there is

This is what I use to learn Portuguese after French, Spanish & Italian:
NHK World Portuguese They're news, mp3 with full transcript, updated 3 times a day. The link to the mp3 is here where the red font and "Streaming ao vivo" are: http://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/portuguese/top/ And the links to the transcripts are here, each news article on a separate webpage, news01.html, news02.html, etc. http://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/portuguese/top/news.html There're usually around 6 to 10 articles to each mp3. 4 persons have voted this message useful | |
