In Italian I do have a severe problem.
I can understand almost everything, given my background in Spanish. I can appreciate a
movie, TV show or books (even non-fiction). However, when it comes to writing, I feel
quite illiterate. I cannot express myself properly, I do not know how to say or write
things, and I have the feeling that it is full of mistakes. Is there a way, to boost
this activity, without annoying everyone who might try to correct my gibberish?
I have been working on a textbook so far, reading some magazines or books every now
and then and watching my favorite TV shows in Italian, but still I am lost when it
comes to expressing myself. I do not know where to actually start with this activity.
Thanks!

Make a language learning log here, and write in Italian. I have a log and I write
almost never in English, just my target languages. I practise writing there, and if it
is rubbish, I always appreciate corrections, but if not, people can just read it
without correcting me. I get to practise all the time without the obligiation of
harming anyone's eyes when I write in terrible grammar or vocabulary in my weaker
languages.
The log really helps. I am not sure why so many people write their logs in English
instead of their target languages, because it allows unlimited writing practise,
without forcing anyone to make corrections, and allowing those to make corrections
should they wish to do so.
I have been writing for 2 years in my log in almost all of my target languages, and
with or without corrections, the sheer writing helps to at least give a feel of how
active production of the language is. Even if I have written some serious
grammatically incorrect rubbish (which I do).

Thanks I will definitely try this.
Originally I intended to write something on lang-8 but could not bring myself to
submitting it in the end, as it was terrible.
Writing a log here instead, does sound like a great idea, and hopefully helps me with
expressing myself a little better.

I have just created my log and follow your (Ae4e6) and Iversen's advice of writing in my
target language. Further than that, I've always tried to practice my languages by
speaking (alone), and this does help activating a language. It's just speaking instead of
writing. Maybe you (crazyleseratte) could also try that? Or find a skype penpal?

Thanks, I have tried talking to myself, for most of my languages, and it tends to work
out quite well, but for Italian I really feel I am lacking all the necessary vocab and
that I would only speak Spanish instead, as I am already fluent in that language. But I
will certainly retry it.
The thing with skype is, that I cannot make it work, since I have a busy and very
arbitrary schedule, so I really lack the time to get together on a certain date and time.
That's the reason, why I wanted to write more, instead of talking.

what is your level of Spanish? Haven't you felt interference at the beginning of learning
Italian?

I am fluent in Spanish, I am able to understand pretty much everything, I can follow
University courses of all topics, and I can write academic essays in the language, so I
believe I am between C1 and C2.
I learnt Spanish years ago, and many years before I started with my Italian.
And yes, I do have experienced interference quite regularly, I always come up with
something Spanish instead of something Italian. I also feel that this is in fact my main
problem with actively using the language. I am scared of mixing things up, and I actually
do mix them up....

I practise speaking to myself in home (obviously not in public so that people do not
start staring at me) because actually transporting to meet people at a certain time just
to practise speaking is not feasible in many cases. The only way is to speak to yourself
if you can at home, to practise pronunciation in addition to writing in the log.
