This week I hit the books by an unprecedented time of 6+ hours. Listening comprehension, exercises and short pieces of writing have been my main objectives. On the other hand, I ended up learning one mere new flashcard a day. This is because my active vocabulary is fading so much that I'm doing my best to retrieve it and will continue to do so for a few weeks.

Vocabulary has been my main focus again. My insistence on retrieving my active vocabulary back is being worthwhile, as I am nearly up-to-date with my flashcards reviewal times in Anki. I have used Anki everyday for two weeks and now notice the words stick better into my memory. It really makes a difference not to miss a few days of study through Anki.

Youtube has turned out to be an excellent source of simple TV series in German with German subtitles. I am harnessing this to get as much input as I can get without losing focus. Although I do not understand much without reading the subtitles, this approach proved itself worthwhile when I was learning English. Back then my listening skills improved rapidly from nill to a very decent understanding in less than 6 months. I don't expect such a stratospheric success now since I lack of a wide vocabulary in German. However, I am sure a massive input will be beneficial at this stage. This week I have watched the ten short chapters of Susanne, which toll over 90 minutes.

Busy week! I haven't devoted myself to German as much as I wish. Perhaps the most significant achievement's been the improvement of my listening skills. I realised I can already understand some videos without subtitles. Youtube abounds on tourism videos. The speakers tend to utter words clearly and slowly and the vocabulary is restraint unless poetical language comes into place. I think I will focus on watching them as it is amazing and motivating to understand German without subtitles, since my vocabulary is still fairly limited. When I turned to watch "Mit Offenen Karten" series I could barely understand anything. I could of course infer a great deal because of the graphics and my knowledge on the topics, though I failed in actually understanding its quickler and more sofisticated German. Therefore, I think tourism videos will fit my purpose at this stage.

My new discovery is audiobooks. Youtube contains a wealth of native and learning material in German and is proving itself a wonderful teaching tool. I haven´t followed my textbook this week either, although I intend to finish it by February. I think my German is improving anyway, even though I am studying half the time than last month.

I listened to a shortened version of Frankenstein (43 min) and understood around 98%. I am proud of it despite the fact that it is intended for students. It is the first piece of audio I ever listened to without visual images, apart from songs. As I understood virtually everything, the experience was very motivating. I then listened to a second audiobook called Heidelberger Herbst (21 min). The story developed somehow quicker and I managed to understand around 85 to 90%. I then switched to native material. This I couldn't understand properly although I did understand many sentences and words. I would say I understood up to 50% of the audio. This is also motivating, albeit it is not enough to fully understand and follow a story. I know by experience than improving that 50% will take increasingly more effort. On the most possitive side, this experience with audiobooks has demystefied the difficulty of understanding German to me.

Regarding vocabulary, I have started to increase the number of new words, as I cope well with most of the words I am reviewing.

I confess I haven't focused on German for the last three weeks. Christmas meals, family meetings and friends ate up my time and I happily surrendered to them.

I am now back!
