Thanks, though I've already mentioned that I purchased Trapman's book.

Sorry, I just skimmed through the thread.

Wow, now that I'm aware of this, I may consider going to Italy in the future for that very purpose!

Don't forget you have to pass the test first to be accepted. The class is free, but finding a place to stay is not. I am sure you will find out what information is needed when the time comes.

An old post by Ardaschir may be of interest.

3) RE: the Assimil Latin course - the book is very good, the tapes unfortunately employ an absurdly exaggerated intonation throughout. Still, it is certainly possible to develop competence with them. However, I myself never really fell in love with "living" Latin until the publication of a much more recent TYS "Beginning Latin" course (again, I will have to give you the specific refence from my office, though I here note that this is one of the VERY few instances of an excellent method being published in recent years).

Hi LilleOSC,

I'm still waiting on this to arrive. I'll let you know once I receive it.

By the way, I noticed the cambridge latin course was mentioned on the forums. I'm thinking of purchasing the first book (north american edition) and the audio cd. Two audio samples are available here

It sounds a bit more professional than I expected.

JasonChoi, what is your speaking goal for Latin? Are you aiming to become fluent? Is it feasible to become fluent in Latin, today?I am planning to study Latin in the future, and I am wondering if it is possible to speak it like you would any other language.

LilleOSC,

Yes, I plan to become fluent, and these are some reasons for studying Latin:

1) I would help me to learn other learn other Romance languages.
2) As a Roman Catholic, I'm interested being able to communicate in Latin. My parish priest (who speaks 10 languages) once told me that when he was in seminary, he and the other seminarians had to communicate in Latin. It was a natural immersion for him. Unfortunately, seminaries generally no longer do this, and I have no way to experiece it other than creating my own immersion (via audio)
3) I simply like to speak in a foreign tongue ;)

Is it feasible to become fluent in Latin? I certainly think so.

Here's a video of two gentleman speaking in Latin (but the first gentleman has quite a horrible accent).

I believe that if they can learn to speak in Latin, I don't see why I cannot.
