That sounds insanely useful; Danish books are virtually impossible to find around here. I think there are maybe four Danish-language novels in my entire library system, only one of which was published after the spelling reform (and just barely--the year of publication is the exact same year in which the reform took place), and that one has mold on the cover, which causes eye irritation whenever I attempt to read it. Charming. As for advanced learning resources, there simply aren't any for Danish in the English-speaking world. Clearly I need to move to Germany.

The following post is written in Danish. First I’d like to encourage Rameau in his Danish studies. And then follows a short summary of my current studymaterial.
Thank you, Rameau for your nice reply :-) Jeg håbede, at jeg kunne læse mere af dig i din danske log – men jeg ved, at det er jo ikke altid så let at skrive om noget man er interesseret i. Alligevel ønsker jeg dig fortsat god arbejdslyst med at lære dig dansk. Og som en lille opmuntering kan du selvfølgelig også skrive her på dansk. Jeg arbejder for ikke så længe siden med bogen “Dansk talesprog I praksis” af Lisbet Thorborg. Bogen drejer sig om informationsudvekslende og handlungsregulerende sproghandlinger samt udtryk for holdninger og følelser. Forfatteren formulerer enkelte sprogmodeller og tilbyder skriftlige øvelser til dem. For eksempel: At spørge til noget, man har glemt Betydningen er: Jeg ved det egentlig godt, jeg har bare lige glemt det. Model: HV-ord ER DET NU,… Hvor bor han? Hvor er det nu, han bor? Hvad laver hun? Hvad er det nu, hun laver? Hvornår møder du? Hvornår er det nu, du møder? (Lav selv nogle eksempler ...) Så denne bog har faktisk omfattende øvelser for talesproget og jeg har alligevel genkendt nogle modeller mens jeg læste en kriminalroman og endnu mere når jeg så på dansk fjernsyn. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Jeg mener ofte, at jeg skulle skrive noget i min log, men jeg gør det alligevel ikke, måske fordi jeg har overbevist mig, at jeg må kun skrive noget "væsentligt" (jeg har åbenbart ikke mærket, at alle mine tidligere skriverier bestod hovesagelig af vidtløftigt vrøvl). Nå ja, måske klare jeg at skrive noget snart. Måske.
Den bog du skriver om lyder meget hjælpsomt; det er godt a have en ressource, der forklare nogle af de finere aspekter a sproget, som ikke altid er så nemt at lære fra konteksten. Jeg ville aldrig have lært tysk uden at have haft sådan nogle bøger, og jeg må tilstå, at jeg begyndte at blive bange for, at denne slags ressourcer slet ikke eksisterede for det danske sprog. Men nu er jeg beroliget. I hvert fald håber jeg, at disse yderligere ressource viser sig at være hjælpsomme for dig! 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Sometimes when reading certain posts in this forum I realize how poor my own written English still is. While my passive vocabulary through the study of BBC’s ”A history in a hundred objects” has increased, the new words have not yet found a way in my writing or even thinking. Nevertheless, I listen in perpetual delight to the voice of the director of the British museum, engrossed in his well spoken English. Every object brings not only new historical snippets but also new terrific words like to gauge (I never would have guessed the pronunciation!), deluge, epitomise, imbued with, denigrated and so on.
But I don’t want to fritter away time by just piling up words without using them. So I started yesterday working through ”Advanced Vocabulary in Use”. After finishing the initial part, learning about basic meaning, polysemy, collocation, connotation and register (what a listing of linguistic terms ...), I jumped right away to the topic ”Talking about books”. As an avid reader I couldn’t resist to start there. I’ve sketched a mind-map to group the relevant words and expressions. Additionally I skimmed through the blurbs of my English novels and crime stories, copying some interesting quotes from critics. After having read John Irvings ”Last Night in Twisted River” – I’ll begin today - I’ll try to write a review using my newly acquired knowledge of how to talk about books. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Hey, congratulations on your achievements in danish. I am writing because I think it's time for you to change the level of your danish in your profile. According to what I've read you could at least move it to basic fluency if not more.
I started studying danish a week ago using only Assimil and I plan to combine this with some radio listening. According to your experience, how helpful was Assimil in your danish language process? Was it the source of all your grammar and structure information? I am aiming for a B2 level in danish and want to test Assimil by myself to see if I can really achieve that level using only Assimil and some radio listening. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

You're welcome guitarob :-) I just went through my skills in Danish and updated them. To your questions:
How helpful was Assimil Danish? Assimil Danish gave me a really solid ground but not more - it has unfortunately only 64 lessons. Additionally I started rather early with excessive reading in Danish and here had Assimil definetely set the basis. Other sources for grammar and structure information? After Assimil I've worked through three other books for selfstudy and I'd say that all books together had worked best for me. These books were German based, though on different levels. I also used now and then a concise Danish Grammar. One of my best online resources is the weekly column „Kanten“ from Radio P1, which I still use. Here I have natural spoken Danish from different speakers with a transcript and it is not aimed to language learners. Last autumn I did some conversation lessons with a Danish teacher and I had no problems in understanding her spoken Danish. She was really surprised about my pronounciation and listening comprehension and hardly couldn’t believe that I had aquired them through selfstudy only. Held og lykke with your Danish studies, guitarob! If you work completely through Assimil you could test your skills with orginal exams for Danish. My intentions for languages in 2011 The upcoming year will hopefully be my time for certificates. I’ve never done any language exams and I’m interested in how it will be. First I wanted to take one for Danish, but that’s unfortunately not longer possible. You need to live in Denmark and you must also have a Danish Socialnumber. Instead I aim now for the C1 Cambridge Advanced English Exam and a B1 in Spanish. In June I’ll take the English exam. Therefore I prepare myself with appropriate materials and some mock exams. For the speaking part I work with an online teacher. I’ve already begun and just completed Assimil’s „Englisch in der Praxis“. For Spanish I have chosen to work with Cervantes AVE. I did the placement test and it said I should take the B1 course. I intend to use an online-tutor as well. Apart from these two main goals, I'll still look into some other languages, but on very low priority. DE: Interessant ist, dass du jetzt Sprachprüfungen vorbereitest. Schade ist, dass Dänemark seine Sprachprüfungen abschottet von Leuten, die nicht in dem Land wohnen. Die Niederlande tun das nicht. Obwohl ich nicht dort wohne, konnte ich in Nijmegen eine Sprachprüfung ablegen. Ich wünsche dir auf jeden Fall viel Erfolg und ich werde mitverfolgen, wie es bei dir klappt. Ich selbst bin noch in der Überlegungsphase, ob ich nach dem "Universala Kongreso" in Kopenhagen eine B1-Sprachprüfung in Französisch vorbereiten soll. Ich werde es erst kurzfristig nach dem Kongress entscheiden, da die Faktoren Geld/Zeit eine Rolle spielen. Grundsätzlich lerne ich nichts nebenher, wenn ich eine Sprachprüfung vorbereite.
