Mezzofanti entered priesthood early in life and never left the Church.

He held various offices in the church:

  • Professor of oriental languages
  • Head of an important Vatican Library
  • Head of the Propaganda (a school for Catholic missionaries)

His title in the church was first that of abate and finally Cardinal.

Cardinals wear a purple robe and hold the highest rank in the Catholic Church. They elect the Pope.
