So I'm planning to go overseas soon to Portugal for ... various reasons. I've dabbled in a Portuguese Extensive Group Class and done about 40 hours, going was good, but work commitments got in the way. I'd say I'm about half way to A1 but helluva rusty.

I have my ear-in, I can distinguish spoken words, but often not the subtleties first time. My parents speak Portuguese, my dad as a first language and my mom as a fluent second. If someone conjugates a word in front of me I can tell the differences. Reading is much better, but I figure that's just because the written word is easier for me than speaking.

With production my grammar is terrible, but I know that (where?) I'm supposed to be doing something even if I'm not sure what. (E.g. I need to make this verb agree with the gender and number, but how does that go again?)

In a month or so I will be fully immersed, and probably looking for a job, so I have some real strong motivation.

Now I'm putting myself through a self-imposed crash course, to see how high and how fast I can go.

Resource
I've got the interwebs! which is great, but also full of garbage. I have the Teach Yourself Complete Portuguese by Manuela Cook, but no CD, but it doesn't matter since the pronunciation is easy for me.

So I will be hitting the beep http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/portuguese/talk/ and doing the Complete Portuguese hopefully at least 5 days a week.

Scratching around for other resources, so far have selected:

Wikipedia 5000 common words http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Wiktionary:Frequency_lists/Por tuguese_wordlist
And the Dicionário Priberam de Língua Portuguesa http://www.priberam.pt/ for later (I don't have the vocab to use it)

Meanwhile I will rely on google translate's gobbeldygoog to help me out.

I'm also avidly reading these forums for hints, tips, and resources.

I really have to do European and not Brazilian, and get it to as high a level as possible.

In case anyone is interested, there are two good, on-line resources for listening and reading Portuguese from Portugal. História do dia is from Sapo kids and has, as the name implies, an audio story with text every day at a beginner's level. 12 months of stories are available on the archive. To download the audio with Mozilla Firefox "ctrl u" to view "page source" then "ctrl f" and enter "mp3" and then search. You'll be looking for a link that is something like this
"http://imgs.sapo.pt/kids/kidspt2009/content/55125370448069h istory_0301.mp3".
Just copy and paste it into a new tab and then save page as mp3.

Another brilliant resource is the Biblioteca Digital Camões. Their section of children's histories has several audio/flash books available telling the history of Portugal and the great explorers and discoveries of Portugal's "golden age":
Secção Infantil
The stories are high quality and, for me, interesting reading about the age of Portuguese discovery. I'm studying Brazilian Portuguese so, the accent is a bit difficult for me to follow but, I am enjoying the stories.

Dug up my old textbook that I was using on the course:

Portugues XXI by Ana Tavares, Level 1. Textbook + CD (~1 hour) + exercise book. ISBN 978-972-757-541-1. Very similar to the Alter-Ego book's I used to learn a bit of French.

Day 1

Nailed:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/portuguese/talk/greetings/

Nice, variety of native speakers, most from the contenent, some serious "che-ching" (Brazilian accent) at the end of the videos, but it just adds a little spice.

TYS:
Read the quick start intro fluff, up to 1st "real" chapter, but not counting it as progress.

Progress: BBC 1/10 TYS 0/25 = 1% overall
