Hiya,
I did the first four books of Integrated Korean, after which I switched to 이화여자대학 교's books: all in Korean, much better for assimilating vocabulary. Those are the only two series I have tried in Korean (and all of them were in a classroom). Integrated is pretty good for grammar, but doesn't offer many exercises or ways to test your knowledge (except in the sold separately workbook, if I remember correctly). The 이대 books are much much better in my experience, but maybe after one has a solid grasp of the fundamentals. @Po-ru and @Leurre Thanks for your responses! Yes, it is somewhat disheartening to pick up Italian and be near a level 3 after 3 months ( After learning Spanish and Portuguese however), then realize after 2 months of Korean you are still not much past "anneyong haseyo!" Hungarian and Turkish seem like a walk in the park compared to Korean. Non-challenges are boring though, right?!? Where does one find the 가나다 course that I have heard so much about? HanBooks (in California) lists the 가나다 (Ganada) books in their "Let's Learn Korean" section: http://www.hanbooks.com/kolate1.html
They also have the 서강 (Sogang) and 연세 (Yonsei) series, about which I've also read good things. Shanna from HangukDrama (the blog of a girl from Singapore who has been studying Korean for several years now) in particular has often expressed her preference for the 연세 series. I've been tempted to dive into the 연세 series myself, but the price seems a bit steep when you add together the cost of all 6 lesson books, 6 workbooks, and 5 reading comprehension books. 3 persons have voted this message useful | |||

http://www.seoulselection.com/ sells Korean textbooks pretty cheap.

I wanted to say that I've purchased from both Hanbooks and from Seoul Selection. I live in the USA and Hanbooks was very cheap and quick shipping [2-3 days] and Seoul Selection was very expensive shipping [shipping cost almost as much as my actual purchase] and it took about a month. I will state that I should have used the USA section of that site to purchase, but somehow I missed it so I had used the international one, and the USA shipping probably would have been cheaper and quicker.
Edit: Actually, I just checked out the USA portion of the site, and it doesn't contain the books that I bought. The same books were on Hanbooks, and although they are more expensive on Hanbooks, the shipping would be quicker and cheaper. The shipping was so expensive from Seoul Selection that it ended up costing more than if I had bought from Hanbooks. I didn't try Hanbook because for me the shipping is expensive too.
I did try Seoul Selection and as far as I remember it was pretty fast. But yes the shipping is expensive. If you live in the US and can read Korean there are also http://www.aladinusa.com/ http://koreanbookcenter.us/ They both have a far greater variety of Korean books than hanbooks. And they should ship for free or nearly free inside the USA. The only european bookstore for Korean books I know is ridiculously expensive http://koreanbooks.de/ So I order directly by http://yes24.com I think it's the Korean amazon. Shipping is expensive but they have everything and it usually ships in 3 days from Korea to Germany. So this may be an option for people outside the USA. 1 person has voted this message useful |
