A little update:
Spanish: Still on Unit 52. I've been giving it about two hours a day, these final lessons are massive. I think I should have it done by the weekend. Also while working sometimes there are times where I can listen to my mp3 player, so I've been playing through the Harry Potter audiobooks. I've gone through books 1/2 and am a little over halfway in the third. The books are pretty simple and I don't think I'm getting much vocabulary-wise out of it, but I think it is helping to keep my mind thinking in Spanish instead of translating back to English. French: Today I added Assimil leçon 86, which I think leaves ten more lessons until the passive wave is complete. I'll start back with the active wave when I've finished the first one. Thinking about the time it would take to do both waves was making me start to not look forward to my French studies and I had sort of abandoned them. But I'm determined to finally get out of this beginner stage, at least as it concerns my writing/speaking. It's been frustrating me for a while (and I think I"ve even become a little bitter towards French!). I'm going to try doing some vocab study with Mnemosyne (for French, not Spanish), like the wordlists I did for Spanish, to see if having a larger vocabulary helps any. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Ça va? Premièrement, tu n'est pas le premier à devenir un peu amer vers le français, je sais qu'il y avait des moments l'année dernier où j'ai senti le même chose, mais si tu fasses un peu d'effort ça passera. Deuxièmement, si tu n'as que dix leçons à finir je te conseil de les faire le plus vit possible. Ne te stresses pas pour ces derniers, fais-le le plus vite que tu peux/veux et tu sentira mieux quand t'as réussit un de tes buts. Troisièmement, ouais j'ai utilisé Assimil comme le seul vrai méthode d'apprentissage d'espagnole, j'ai quelques autres livres/grammaires/trucs que je n'ai pas vraiment commencé d'étudier mais Assimil était la base sur lequel je vais construire l'espagnole. Thanks, ExtraLean. I just bought the Routledge Frequency Dictionary of French, as I have the Spanish one and went through somewhere around the first 4,000 words before putting Mnemosyne aside. I've decided to try to increase my French vocabulary pretty drastically, cause I feel like that helped a LOT with my Spanish. So far I've gone through the first 1000 or so words (giving me about 600 words in my French deck). We'll see where the book leaves me.
Apart from that, I didn't do much other language study over the weekend unfortunately. I had wanted to finish Unit 52, but now I think I'll need to go through it a couple more times after not having touched it since Thursday or Friday. I didn't keep up with Assimil either, but that's ok, I'll add a new lesson tonight. Listened to several hours of the Harry Potter audiobook in Spanish and finally transferred a Spanish Radioteatre that had been stored on my computer for a while to my mp3 player. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Spanish:
Well I finished Unit 52 and started Unit 53 today. I've been reading regularly in Spanish and talking over IM, but I really want to get over FSI so I can start some more intensive "immersion"-type stuff. French: I've also been doing some French vocabulary work, having around 400 entered into Mnemosyne and another 250 or so still to enter from wordlists I've made. Again, there's been another little lapse in my Assimil lessons, but I HAVE at least been studying French. Turkish: What? Yep. A language I had never really thought much about until a few days ago, and now forum member serducar has presented me with an incredible opportunity to study Turkish. So far, I haven't done a whole lot, just reading up on the pronunciation and browsing his (serdarucar's) Turkish site. The structure of the language is completely different from any other language I've ever studied (really: Latin, Spanish, French, German) and I am really excited to see where this takes me. Another thing that touches home for me is that (I've heard) there is a large Turkish-speaking community in Germany, Germany being the country I have wanted to live in ever since I can remember. Oh, today I also watched a movie called L'auberge espagnole (The Spanish Apartment). The French used throughout the movie was mostly a mystery to me, but thanks to the English subtitles I was able to follow along. Why I really mention it though is that it most of the movie took place in Barcelona and whenever they switched to Spanish it was almost a relief because I didn't have trouble understanding them. Also, I think they spoke a little Catalan as well, but I'm not sure. Really, it sounded to me like Spanish spoken with a different accent, or rather I didn't have much trouble understanding what was being said. I wasn't really dissecting it too much but everything just clicked in my head and didn't sound too strange. Anyway, if you're studying French and Spanish, it might be worthwhile checking out (I found it on YouTube, with English subtitles). EDIT: And when I say "The French used..." I don't mean the specific style of French, but rather that MY French is rather weak and I couldn't understand whole dialogues like I could when they switched to Spanish. EDIT2: I decided to officially update the title of the thread, as I don't think I will fit German or Russian study into this TAC period. I don't want to say that I set unrealistic goals for myself, I am just not where I thought I would be at this point in neither French nor Spanish. Certainly a LOT better than a year ago, though! Spanish: Went through the dialog of Unit 53 twice. Tomorrow I'll probably do the drills twice, and if I have time the dialog once, since this unit is a little shorter than the last one (maybe around an hour and fifteen minutes?), but it still took me nearly two hours to get through the dialog today, with all the pausing and slight distractions (ahem) included. French: Mnemosyne repetitions and started back up with Assimil. I added leçon 89. I had planned to do another wordlist, but instead you all get this wonderful update :) Oh, I also wrote an e-mail to my sister in French when I was trying to motivate myself to do some Spanish! Turkish: Went through the dialog/questions several times that serdarucar posted on his turkishturkish.net site for me. I made parallel texts out of the initial dialog and left the questions as they were since that was already a nice format for me. I tried to assign a meaning to each word and make out the different suffixes. I tried listening to just the audio without the text, but it's too much for now. I can't believe it, soon I will have finished FSI AND the first wave of Assimil Francés! I'll have to arrange it so that they're both on the same day, that way if I ever feel frustrated I can think back to that time when I finished both Platiquemos and Assimil on the same day and there is my motivation to keep going. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

As usual, hit another stump, namely being EXHAUSTED after working for 11 hours monday and another 10 on tuesday. Excuses excuses, right?
Spanish: I've reviewed the drills twice and tonight did the dialog once for FSI Unit 53. Also wrote a lang-8 journal tonight because it feels like a while since I've written something in Spanish (maybe a few days). It's not particularly well thought-out, I just generally enjoy writing in Spanish because it isn't that difficult for me anymore (even if I do still make quite a few mistakes) and reminds me that I was indeed able to teach myself quite a bit. French: Not much, I really have only had a couple hours each day (2-3) that weren't consumed by work or meals and I have been prioritising Spanish and Turkish for the time being. Anyway, I've been keeping up with my Mnemosyne reps and keep wanting to add more vocabulary and doing more Assimil lessons. Eventually I'll get there. Here's a lang-8 journal in French as well. Turkish: Been reviewing the lessons serdaruçar prepared for me. I've been trying to listen to the audio while I work, but it's hard to concentrate on both things at once. I've also been telling just about everyone I know that I'm now studying Turkish, hoping someone else will get interested in it and want to study it with me. Today was a pretty good review day, trying to catch up to all my slacking off lately.
Spanish Did the dialog once and the drills twice. French I found that I hadn't entered all of my wordlists into Mnemosyne, so I reviewed them and added another 160 or so words to Mnemosyne. Turkish Nothing yet. Well, I did watch a Turkish movie when I woke up this morning (Devrim Arabalari) with English subtitles. I don't know the word for subtitles in Turkish so I haven't found them yet, but I'd like to try watching with both Turkish and English subtitles. It reminds me of trying to watch French movies before I studied French, understanding a word here and there, only without all the cognates. Anyway, I plan to devote the rest of the night to Turkish! 1 person has voted this message useful | |||
