Ja, ek sou italiaans hier geskryf men ek het gister 'n baie veel interessant video oor Afri-Frans gesien.

I know I have been writing about Italian but yesterday I found a video about the Afri-Frans project and naturally I had to write about it in Afrikaans. The idea was to translate some well-known Afrikaans into French and then record the French versions. I really want the cd but I doubt I can buy it unless I can find it online.

If you haven't already guessed, this post was also my subtle way of admitting I still need to learn more Italian words.

Lekker dag
Mick

The next verb tense in my continuing overview of Italian grammar is going to be trapassato prossimo or, in English, the past perfect which is another compound tense. It makes sense to me to learn trapassato prossimo after the imperfetto because the first verb used in this tense is an imperfetto form of avere or essere and the second verb is the past participle. I have already listed the imperfetto conjugations for essere in message #174 and I will list the imperfetto forms for avere now:

Avere
io avevo
tu avevi
lui/lei/Lei aveva
noi avevamo
voi avevate
loro/Loro avevano

Oh, I forgot to mention that this tense is used when describing two actions that occurred at different times in the past.

This post is taking a while to write for two reasons: My Italian vocabulary is too limited right now and I need to get some sleep so I will have to continue this post later.

Buona notte e sogni d'oro!
Mick
Ahhhh... Distractions are both fun and detrimental to actually focusing on certain languages. I don't actually consider my last post proof that I sometimes become too distracted by other languages because Afrikaans is one of the languages I claim to be currently learning, but when I saw the news of the attacks in Norway on Friday morning I thought two things 1. I would definitely remember to mention the people of Norway in my prayers for a while (Yes, I really am doing this) and 2. After reading this post by Khatzumoto I decided that this story would be a good reason to have another go at trying to read Norwegian, even though my previous attempt to read Norwegian wasn't actually a success (If you would like try to decipher my mediocre written Swedish there are a few more details here). This time I resisted the temptation to use online dictionaries but I did recognize and understand a few more words than last time, so maybe that's progress in passively learning to read a little Norwegian based on my limited knowledge of Swedish.

Now for the long-awaited continuation of my post on trapassato prossimo. I've already mentioned when this tense can be used so here are a few sentences:

Sono andata a chiesa sua ma tu eri uscito. (I went to church but you had already left.)

Avevo chiuso le finestre quando è soffiato il vento. (I closed the window when the wind blew) I'm not sure that last one is right and even if it is correct I still want to think of more sentences which will go into my Italian study notebook.

Arrivederci
Mick

Sono andata a chiesa (sua) ma tu eri uscito. (is more correct to say "Sono andata nella sua chiesa")

(I went to (his/her) church but you already went out )
It sounds like you went to the church of John and then realize that Bill already was gone away. ( remember also "andata" is feminine - "andato" is masculine)

Avevo chiuso le finestre quando è soffiato il vento
The sentence is right but "quando soffiava il vento" is better.

Grazie vilas
I see that the mistakes I make when writing Italian are similar to the mistakes I make when writing Spanish, such as forgetting the gender agreement in nouns and trying to write complicated sentences when a simpler sentence would be much better.

Hey Mick

While extremely bored, I stumbled upon you Afrikaans post and thought I should correct
it for you :)

Take a deep breath.

(Oh, and I should warn you, please ignore my Afrikaans spelling. It’s not as good as it
should be, and I don’t have an Afrikaans spellchecker on this PC)

“Ek sou italiaans hier geskryf men ek het gister 'n baie veel interessant video
oor Afri-Frans gesien”

“Ek sou Italiaans hier geskryf” -> Ek sou Italiaans hier geskryf HET. (It’s like ”I
would HAVE written Italian here”)

“Men” -> MAAR

“ ‘n baie veel interessant video” -> “ ‘n baie INTERESSANTE video” (You can’t say “baie
veel”, but for emphasis you could say something like “ ‘n VERSKRIKLIKE interessante
video”. Also, “interessant” (like many other adjectives) adds an –e before nouns.

Afri-Frans is 'n projek waar frans sangers het gewild afrikaanse leidjies binne
die frans taal vertaal en geluidopname.

“Frans sangers’ -> “FRANSE sangers”; “Gewild afrikaanse leidjies”-> “GEWILDE Afrikaanse
liedjies”. (same story :) (Note “liedjies”. “ie” and “ei” are two very different
sounds.

“Geluidopname”-> Opgeneem (I assume)

“Binne die frans taal” -> NA FRAANS (I’ve heard people say “die Franse taal”, but that
doesn’t sound very natural to me)

“…het vertaal en opgeneem” is correct in simple sentences and some compound sentences.
Some conjunctions, however, require a change in word order. Compare “Dit het gebeur” to
“Dit is waar dit gebeur het”. So, the entire sentence should read “Afri-Frans is ‘n
projek waar Franse sangers gewilde Afrikaanse liedjies na Fraans vertaal en opgeneem
het.”

Ek dink nie dat ek die cd in Noord-America mag koop nie, miskien gaan ek dit
aanlyn vind

“Mag” -> “kan” (“mag” indicates permission. “ek mag dit koop” means “I am allowed to
buy it)

“gaan…vind” -> “vind” (this is a bit finicky, but the present tense seems more natural
to me) So “miskien vind ek dit aanlyn”.

I give you my permission to ignore this next point: “Ek dink nie dat ek die CD in
Noord-Amerika kan koop nie” -> “ek dink nie ek kan die CD in Noord-Amerika koop nie”
(It’s faster and easier to say, but yours is perfectly fine :)

My geliefde liedjie hier is die frans weergawe van stuur groete van mannetjies
roux 'n lied dat ek amper twee jaar verlede binne engels het alreeds vertaalde.

“geliefde liedjie” is fine, I think. I haven’t really heard it, but it might make
perfect sense (in a weird, deep kind of way. It’s hard to explain). I’d just say
“gunsteling liedjie”

Again, “Frans weergawe” -> “Franse weergawe”

“’n Lied dat ek amper twee jaar verlede binne Engels het alreeds
vertaalde”

“Dat”->”wat”

“Verlede”->”gelede” (Verlede=past; gelede=ago)

Complete sentence: “ ‘n Lied wat ek amper twee jaar gelede reeds na Engels vertaal het”
(vertaalde=translated, yes. But it can’t be used like this. You might say “die
vertaalde lied”, but not often)

Ongelukkig vind ek geen video van die frans veergawe van die mannetjies roux
lied nie men ek het die frans weergawe van Kinders van die wind en Al lê die berge nog
so blou gehoor.

“Ongelukkig vind ek geen video van die frans weergawe…nie” -> “ongelukkig KAN ek geen
video van die FRANSE weergawe… vind nie”

“men”-> “maar” (“MEN” does NOT exist in Afrikaans)

That’s all, I think (hope). Once again, forgive my terrible Afrikaans spelling. I hope
my corrections didn't confuse you xD

Ps- There is also a Afri-Spaans CD   :D

Ciao

Thank you for the corrections, Syntax. I'm not bothered by your Afrikaans spelling and I didn't notice any mistakes anyway.

Your corrections are are very helpful and help me get some ideas of what I need to learn so that I can improve my written Afrikaans.

I don't know why this is, but I never remember how to use "het" when it is at the end of a sentence, so that's something I will need to focus on.

Typing "men" instead of "maar" is a little embarassing. I know the Afrikaans word is "maar" and typing "men" must have been interference from Swedish.

"Veel"? That could have been interference from Dutch, even though I don't really know Dutch.

I forgot, or never knew, that "interessant" takes an -e before a noun; so that is also a good thing to know.

Misspelling "liedjies" with "ei" was definitely a typing error.

Yes, I meant "opgeneem" there.

“…het vertaal en opgeneem” is correct in simple sentences and some compound sentences.

“Dit is waar dit gebeur het”. So, the entire sentence should read “Afri-Frans is ‘n

het.”

So "na Fraans" is better, I was unsure about that one. I know that some of the conjunctions change the word order of a sentence, but I'm still unclear on specific details.

Of course, I should have remembered that "kan" was a better choice, and then the present tence would be natural for the last part of the sentence...Ok, got it.

This is good to know.

I see I've forgotten a bit more vocabulary, I'll need to work on that and make sure I remember that when an adjectives is placed before a noun it adds an -e.

So "gelede" is better, that is a new word for me and I was unsure about "vertaalde" and I see that I really will need learn when I should put "het" at the end of a sentence. More reading will help.

Interesting that I didn't notice that "kan" should be here and I really must have had Swedish on my mind when I typed "men" twice.

The corrections were not at all confusing and I really appreciate the advice. The only Afrikaans spelling mistakes I noticed was when I misspelled "liedjie", so if you made any mistakes I didn't notice

I saw a video about the Afri-Spaans CD and there will also be an Afri-Talia CD which I think is Afrikaans to Italian.

Jag behövde lyssna på mera svenska så tittade en debatt i eftermiddagen. Debatten var om frågan, "Behöver vi en moralisk kompass?" men debatten var rikitgt om ateism och kristendom. Den har debatt var intressant men inte särskilt originell och debattörerna sade ingenting nu men jag ville bara höra mera svenska. Jag måste erkänna att videon har engelsk undertitlar och utan de jag förstod kanske 30%.

I also realized that I have forgotten the definite and indefinite articles in Italian so I know I will be looking over my notes on them before I go to bed tonight along with practicing Italian pronunciation. When pronouncing Italian words I don't know which syllable should be stressed, sometimes it's obvious that I need to stress the second to last syllable of a word but in many words the stress is on another syllable.

Many who read this log probably already know this, but in case you haven't seen the 6WC thread I will focus on Italian in August.

hej då
ciao

My 6 week long Italian challenge began yesterday. I had intended to stay up until 12 am to get an early start but I didn't do that yesterday, as I was more tired than usual on Sunday. What I did do, after getting some sleep and tending to many chores was study Italian for 1 hour and 15 minutes, not enough to be highly ranked on twitter bot's list but hopefully I can find more time for studying today.

I chose to focus on listening and pronunciation, mostly listening to Italian music in attempt to recognize words, I did not recognize many words, maybe 5 to 10% of what I heard but I was a little bit surprised when I realized that English helps me as much as Spanish does when listening to Italian. This is surprising because I believe that written Italian resembles Spanish and French, but because of the variable stress Italian initially sounds like Spanish but with English syllable stress. Well, not really like English, but it seems that in many words I should emphasize a syllable other than the second to last one.

Also I was happy to find the the Rai TV website until I saw a message on my screen "Spiacente, la visione di questo filmato è solo agli utenti nel territorio Italiano." and below this I read in somewhat broken, though still intelligible, English "Sorry, this content is resereved to the users in the Italian country." The Italian phrase also shows that the words I don't recognize at all are words such as "agli" and "nel". I am allowed to hear RAI radio so I will do that when I want to listen natural spoken Italian instead of Teach Yourself dialogues or music.

Buonanotte
Mick

EDIT: So many typos in my English, I hope I've caught, and corrected all of them
