Just a quick update. I have just come back from spending nearly the entire weekend attending the required activities for applying for this exchange year (three interviews, an impromptu speech, presentations on various countries, etc.). Anyways, I've now officially submitted my country preferences, which actually changed quite a bit from what I was planning just a few weeks ago. I listed Croatia, the Czech Republic, and Hungary as my top three choices, so assuming I get into the program it's likely that I'll be sent to one of those countries. I did also leave room for countries like Turkey, Romania, the Netherlands, and France, though, so it's possible that I could end up living in one of those next year if my top three don't work out. I should be getting a call sometime in the next few days -- possibly as early as tonight -- informing me first of all of whether or not I have been accepted into the program, and if so, what country I will be sent to next year. I'm excited!

Philip, you've contaminated me with your megalomanaiacal projects. I'm not in double
digits like you, but I've been sampling Afrikaans, Russian, Japanese and Spanish this
year, all completely unplanned. Just.. happened. Fortunately, the infection has been
beaten back and I've returned to my big three, but I can still hear voices back there.

Well I just got my phone call. I was asleep when it came, actually, but I woke right up when I heard who was calling. I was practically dancing around the room when they notified me that I'll be spending the next school year living in Croatia, most likely in or near Zagreb! I'm so excited right now!

Congratulations! I am so happy for you, particularly because you even got your first choice. What will you be
studying, and what sort of programme is this? They must be over the moon to have someone like you in it!

That's great news Philip. You must be so excited! Will you be living in a host family? Going to a regular
Croatian high school? Studying Croatian in a class? Whatever, you will have a fantastic year, and I have
no doubt you will return with a much higher level of language skill than your too modest goal of B2!

Congratulations! I'm happy for you too. I'm also pleased to see that Czech Republic and Hungary got up to number 2 and 3 in your list in the end.

What did you base your selections on? Mainly language? Will you get much time for traveling around other countries and using your other European languages?
