Tomorrow (15.11.2012) I'll start studying Catalan as a part of the Assimil Experiment

The name of this log has been changed accordingly.

This is the way I'll do the lessons:

Passive phase
1) Listen twice with book closed.
2) Listen once while reading Catalan.
3) Listen once while reading Spanish.
4) Study the text, the notes and the translation until complete understanding.
5) Listen again while reading Catalan.
6) Listen again with book closed.
7) Read again texts and notes from more complex previous lessons.
8) Listen to the lesson again and repeat each sentence aloud.
9) Do the exercises.
10) Listen to the last 10 lessons during commute trying to repeat sentences aloud.
11) Listen again the lesson of the day just before going to sleep.

Dictation
Beginning at Lesson 30, with dictation from lesson 1, a new dictation each day after the passive lesson of the day, if there is one. After an idea by Marishka in our Group Log.

Active phase (to be done before the passive phase lesson of the day, if there still is one).
1) Read text in Spanish.
2) Translate it to Catalan, without the use of dictionary and grammar books.
3) Listen to the lesson while reading the translation.
4) Compare texts. Use dictionary if necessary.
5) Study the related grammar topics. Use an extra grammar book if needed.
6) Repeat listening also to the lessons already translated during commute.

After the end of passive phase
1) Try to read at least a different text in Catalan on Wikipedia everyday.
2) Listen to news and music in Catalan.
3) Read news in Catalan from RSS feeds.

Edit: Changed order of activities in the passive phase, because exercises are more active than expected.

Lliçó primera = 12
Lliçó segona = 17
Lliçó tercera = 22
Lliçó quarta = 29
Lliçó cinquena = 13
Lliçó sisena + lliçó 7 = 33

Total for the first group = 2.1 hours

Lliçó vuit = 23

Assimil Experiment: El Catalán sin esfuerzo - Day 3 - Lesson 3 (Lliçó tercera)

Today I've got more repetitions at home, since there is no job commuting, Gott sei Dank! The slow pace of the speech is somewhat annoying, but certainly necessary to help us getting used to the sounds of the language.

I'm enjoying the Refrany (Proverbs), which help me to more easily memorize some words and repeat sounds. Qui té una hora bona, no les té totes dolentes.

Assimil Experiment: El Catalán sin esfuerzo - Day 4 - Lesson 4 (Lliçó quarta)

Again, more repetitions at home, which almost brought me to the "ideal 30 minutes".

In this lesson, it is said that the verbs ser and estar (both translated often, but not always, with forms of the verb to be in English, as most of you possibly know) in Catalan are used in some ways different from Spanish, which means that it is also different from Portuguese. The "perfect perifràstic" also seems something not so easy to master. It is clear that those topics require further studies.

Edit: "Ser" and "estar" are the Portuguese/Spanish verbs, the corresponding Catalan ones are "ésser" and "estar".

As said before, besides the Assimil Experiment, I'm also studying Italian. The book "Canta che ti passa, by Naddeo and Trama, is exactly what I need at this moment. I hope to start writing something in Italian in Lang-8 at the beginning of 2013.

Assimil Experiment: El Catalán sin esfuerzo - Day 7 - Lesson 8 (Lliçó vuit)

Once more, even after listening twice and listening while reading Catalan, I couldn't understand all words, though I've got the general meaning of all phrases. Two new verbal and one new pronoum structures. Instead of Refrany we have now Endivinalla (riddle), which is also a very good way to learn some basic vocabulary like colors etc.

Time required

Lliçó vuit = 23 minutes

Lessons 1 to 7 = 2.1 hours

Assimil Experiment: El Catalán sin esfuerzo - Day 8 - Lesson 9 (Lliçó nou)

This lesson introduces many names of foods and other things, which I didn't know, of course, even in Spanish in one case (porrón).

On the other hand, this has been so far the best lesson, because it introduces the lyrics of the wonderful music El noi de la Mare. Learning languages definitely teaches you much more than words and grammar!

Vuit (8) = 23
Nou (9) = 25

Total time for groups of lessons (hours)

1 to 7 = 2.1

Very similar to the last one. Nothing new on the grammar front either.

I've found this site with lots of Catalan proverbs. St. George seems to be really very popular in Catalonia.
